A fantastic series for kids with reading diffieculties. Easy vocabulary is constantly repeated, with increasing difficulty through the series. I've had great luck with kids for whom phonics is not their thing, this is a very helpful sight word approach. And the boy and his adventures are things kids can identify with-it makes little difference that it's set in the 50's.
One of my favorite books growing up, and still a classic - though a vintage one.
I had my student (10) read it, and it was the first time ever during our reading/tutoring sessions that he read the entire time! Also, he didn't ask if it was time to go until 50 minutes into the hour. Both are records! Though he mentioned the book was old fashioned (it was even when I was a kid), he clearly enjoyed the illustrations, the reading was at his level, and he liked predicting what would happen next. I am so happy I have the rest of the collection!
This book was a nostalgic trip down the bookmobile lane for me. One of my earliest memories is going to the bookmobile outside my home and having the good fortune to find a Jim Forest and Ranger Don book on the shelves. So at least one star of the rating is for warm fuzzy feelings.
This book has it all: mystery, humor, nature, wildlife, danger, wise Ranger Don, excitable nephew Jim Forest, and 103 different words--listed in the back. A beautiful primer level book from 1959. I can't believe it isn't still around. It turns out you can get a lot of memories for $15 on the internet.
