Βιβλίο που έχω ξαναδιαβάσει και που θα ξαναδιαβάσω. Δεν θα προχωρήσω σε βιβλιοκρισία, απλά θα γράψω δύο λόγια υπό μορφή σημειώσεων περισσότερο για τον εαυτό μου...
Μπεττίνα Μρεντάνο. Η μοιραία γυναίκα που "έπαιζε" και τους δύο μεγάλους άνδρες. Που της άρεσε, κολακευόταν να τους φλερτάρει (ιδίως τον Γκαίτε). Το περίφημο επεισόδιο με τον Γκαίτε να υποκλίνεται στους ευγενείς και τον Μπετόβεν να προχωρεί αγέρωχος ... Αναφέρεται από την Μπεττίνα στην αλληλογραφία της αλλα΄θα πρέπει να το θεωρήσουμε αληθινό. Τα πειστικά επιχειρήματα του Ρομαίν Ρολάν. Ωτσόσο υπάρχει και η άποψη του Μ. Κούντερα στην "Αθανασία"του. Εμένα πάντως ο Ρ. Ρ. με έπεισε. Ο Κούντερα λιγοτερο πειστικός.
Η σιωπή του Γκαίτε: "Τότε ο Γκαίτε παραδέχεται, αναγνωρίζει, θαυμάζει αν θέλετε αυτό το μεγαλείο (τη μουσική του Μπετόβεν). Μα δεν τον αγαπάει. Δύο πράγματα δεν αγαπάει καθόλου: το υπέρμετρο και τη ρομαντική μελαγχολία. Δεν ανέχεται ό,τι τσακίζει και ό,τι συνθλίβει.... dΔεν ανέχεται τον πολύ θόρυβο.Ποιούς θεωρούσε μεγάλους μουσουργούς ο Γκαίτε ; (ο οποίος σημειωτέον εγνώριζε πιανο και βιολοντσέλο και είχε γράψει κι ίδιος μουσική) Αγαπούσε τον Μπαχ, τον Χάιντελ τον Γκλούκ (που τον θεωρούσε κορυφαίοκαι φυσικά τοον Μότσαρτ! Ο Μεσσίας ήταν το αγαπημένο του έργο. Ήθελε να γραψει το αντίστοιχο λογοτεχνικό έργο του Μεσσία... Λάτρευε τον Μπαχ: "Δεν θάπρεπε να τον λένε ρυάκι (bach) αλλά θάλασσα!.
Πώς λοιπόν να κατακρίνουμε τον Γκαίτε επειδή δεν αγάπησε τον Μπετόβεν όπως εκείνος τον ίδιο;

This French author read letter after letter of Goethe and his associates (usually women) to explore why these two were not better friends and didn't collaborate much at all. This was quite a circle of friends including Schiller, Mozart and even Clara (Shumann) who played for Goethe for three days in his later years before she married Robert. The book also goes into some detail about Bettina the daughter of an old girlfriend of Goethe's. She was deeply devoted to him as was he to her (all the while married to Christianne). Bettina was a fearless advocate for freedom. So now a lot more to learn about the great man and all his interests. Very enjoyable and well written.

The writing style is very dated and can be slow going. However, it relies a great deal in letters between the great intellectuals and artists of the era, and that in itself is very interesting: to be able to "hear" the conversational tone used by these people, whom we get to know often only through dry history books, among themselves.
