Me and My Likker

Rate this book
The true story of the notorious and legendary moonshiner Popcorn Sutton. Written by Popcorn in his own words along with a little help from a great woman, EEU. Without EEU in his life the book probably would have never existed. This book is one of the first editions of Me and My Likker. This book is also one of the RARE ORIGINALS with Popcorns AUTHENTIC and REAL SIGNATURE (NO COPIES, NO REVISIONS, NO FORGERIES) Popcorn was born and raised in Maggie Valley NC. He started learning how to make moonshine at the age of 5 and started smoking cigarettes at the age of 6. Popcorn was a self made man who loved women, Likker and raising Hell. Popcorn was a modern day Jessie James but the only thing he stole was the hearts of many women. He never bothered anybody and nobody ever bothered him because they knew better. In the past many tried to halt Popcorn and his moonshine mastery and, they finally succeeded. Now there are many who are trying to halt the Sutton family tradition, Popcorns moonshine legacy and our way of living. But myself, Sky and Regina will always keep the Sutton Family tradition alive and make sure that Popcorn Sutton goes down in history. His legacy will live on forever. Thank you for your support. Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton (October 5, 1946 – March 16, 2009) was an American Appalachian moonshiner originally from Maggie Valley, North Carolina. He wrote a self-published autobiographical guide to moonshine production, and self-produced a home video depicting his moonshining activities, and he was later the subject of a documentary that won a Regional Emmy Award. He committed suicide in 2009 rather than report to Federal prison after being convicted of offenses related to moonshine production.

It's okay. The good part is that it is about as blunt and heartfelt as you'd expect; the bad part is that Popcorn was simultaneously not a great storyteller, didn't really have much useful to say, and continually cycles back to the same talking points over and over again (seemingly thinking they're new every time).

The book itself is horribly formatted and difficult to read -- it's literally in comic sans with huge page margins and barely any kerning. It doesn't make for easy reading.

I think this would have been better as an interview or effectively just a series of voice recordings. It reads like it too, just a moonshiner's ramblings to a friend. If not for that, I'd have given it 2 stars; I think just for the bit that's in there and the fact that you rarely hear someone quite so... _not_ eloquent, I'll give it 3 stars.

Well, it's not going to win any prizes for literature, but it was an interesting look at a life lived in a different time and place. There were amusing anecdotes and fascinating insights into what is a surprisingly complex method of making "likker".
It's a shame they had to sentence him to prison and hasten his death - especially now since the manufacture and sale of moonshine is accepted and widely appreciated far beyond it's humble origins in mountains of Appalachia.

Written in popcorns vernacular is quite fun to read. The man wrote what he felt how he felt. He pulls no punches. I purchased the book from his widow.

This was an autobiography of a mountain man who made his living by making moonshine. He became more popular by the television show "Moonshiners". It is written as it came to his mind, there is no chapters; and written as if he was sitting right in front of you. He did have 'quite the mouth on him' so there is curse words almost every other word. So if you don't like reading that type of language then skip this book. It really wasn't 'that' good but for folks that like Moonshiners and want to know a little more about Popcorn that most of the Shiners talk about then pick this book up.
