The Chalam Færytales #6
The Stag at Hand
The Chalam Færytales: the story of unlikely allies Miriam and Ezra as they seek to uncover the mystery of the White Stag in a Victorian fantasy world of magic, peril, and devastating romance.
A thousand years after the Great War, the world is no closer to peace. The legend of the Promised One has died. The lore has faded. And in the aftermath of the fabled reign of King Ferryl and Queen Adelaide, the supposed Golden Era of Har-Navah is anything but idyllic.
Trapped in a web of political games, Miriam Sasson is enslaved—body and soul—to the High Priest of Har-Navah. But until she met Ezra Kelach, she hadn’t bothered to care. Embarking on a mission to stop the kingdom from corruption, Miri and Ezra develop an unexpected friendship that challenges everything they know—about Har-Navah, about magic, and certainly about love.
Together, Ezra and Miri unveil a tangle of secrets and games so dark, the cost of freedom could be their lives.
With unforgettable characters, heartbreaking romance, and page-turning twists, this richly-intricate fantasy series continues a thousand years after book five left off, exploring themes of the shackles of abuse, the price of freedom, and the power of sacrificial love—all centered around one question: what is the White Stag?

OH. MY. WORD. Y'all this lady is a literary GENIUS. Each book I read becomes my new favorite. I literally could not put it down. So so so incredibly good. Amazing story line. I laughed and I cried. Anyone who knows me knows I do NOT do those things easily. 1000000% recommended.

Loved the book, but not for kids for sure!
I was a little surprised at how the story turned initially, but as I kept going I realized what courage it took to write this story and how important that stories like this be told. Human sex trafficking is a real problem and I see this as Miri's story and the redemption that is available for her. Tastefully done but gets the horror of trafficking across. And the hope for the survivor as being seen for who she is and not what she was lured and trapped into doing.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series—I've read 6 out of 7 books so far. Morgan's use of vivid imagery and expressive language brings each story to life in a breathtaking way. Every time I open a book, I'm transported into a beautifully crafted fantasy world.

It was difficult to wrap my mind around letting go of Ferryl and Adelaide for all new characters… but I got over that in all of 3 chapters. Ezra and Miri are incredible, so realistic and so relatable. I feel like I know them. But this book…. OH MY GOSH where do I begin?
First of all, Morgan’s writing has deepened to something profound and rich. She weaves story and character and emotion and mind-blowing world building to create something truly powerful. But I will say….this book is a lot darker than the others. It was really hard to read at times. Morgan doesn’t shy away from the more difficult aspects of abuse.
And now for the spoilers…
I. Adore. Ezra.
There. I said it. His heart and his love and his kindness and his humor and his confident swagger… he’s perfect. Another book boyfriend *sigh* But it’s the WAY he loves Miri, it’s the WAY he sees the best in her, calls it out of her. OMG all the feels. Miri is so broken and lost in this book but Ezra just says f*** that we’re going to get through this together. It’s perfect.
I love that he loves her without rescuing her. That he helps her heal without trying to fix her. It’s just… there are no words for how beautiful and profound this story is. And it brings to light the travesty of human trafficking in a way that made me realize it’s not just creeps stealing little girls. It’s women who feel trapped in a situation they can’t get out of. Sometimes all it takes is someone showing them their worth. That’s Ezra’s and Miri’s story. And it may be my favorite so far.
I’m glad this is only the first book in this storyline because I need more.
Side note::::::: Also, I adore Rachæl and have a sneaking suspicion we’re going to learn more from her in future books.
Will DEFINITELY KEEP READING these books. 10/10 recommend if you like:
*swaggering male leads
*slow burn but realistic romance
*relatable characters
*magic that is in everyday life
*anything Victorian
*powerful women who find their own strength
*equality in a romantic partnership
*old fashioned chivalry
Okay excuse me now I have to go read it again.

Well. I have been holding onto this one for a while because I didn’t want it to be over and now—it’s not over gaaahhh. This one is different from the other books in the series. I seem to remember Morgan telling her readers this fact but I wasn’t prepared for the sexual abuse and the sheer brutality that was involved in this book. I am still figuring out how I feel about it. I love the Chalam færy tales and I love you Morgan. Finish this up and move on. You have so much fabulousness to light up the world with. Show us what else you got.
