The Seventh Shaman #2

Mountains of the Gods

More enemies than he can handle…

Akuleh—Ku to his friends—has completed primary flight school and has reached his operational squadron, but a terrifying foe awaits. The Supremacy, an unbeatable enemy who kills its prisoners in horrifying ways, continues to advance across the galaxy, capturing one ally world after another and the resistance seems unable to stop them.

Worse, though, is the enemy who wants his soul. Machitew, death demon of his people’s ancient tales, continues to wrestle for control of Ku’s destiny, tormenting him with prescient glimpses of losing his friends and fellow pilots in combat—people Ku has no way to save.

But when he gets shot down behind enemy lines, Ku has an encounter that will not only alter his role in the war but change the course of his life.

Awesome Book

Awesome story. Military SF is always best when written by a veteran and this book is no exception. Action packed, believable characters and a big twist make this book a real winner.

Top Gun plus Space Opera plus Indian MC plus a little bit of romance(but I guess that is where Top Gun comes in).......Oh we have magic too but only as a sidenote and some ramblings, but let us see, since I am hoping the Third Book would be ingressing and egressing hot.......

The universe created by Ms. Read is truly wonderful, full of wonderful characters, as diverse as I think they are(We have Indians, Jamaicans, Russians or their literary counterparts, honestly it does not ruin the story, gives it more depth), then the explanations of the spacecraft used, how they are ran, which explosives are used.....and so forth, but the best part is the complete knowledge on how an air force should be, we have briefings and debriefings, callsigns, we have missions, we have reconnaisance, name it and it is there.....this is like watching Top Gun in Space....the only thing I am missing are large scale combat manuevers....I would love to read about Destroyers, Interdictors, and so forth(why does Admiral Ackbar's infamous line "It's a trap" keep on repeating in my head)....

The story does not move fast but the reader will feel the plot moving...
And what about the dialogues of the characters, Just makes you smile, laugh, and even angry, in everything you just have to have some bad eggs....

With all of this going on, the Author was able to flesh out the Chalca race as an Indian/Mayan type of people, together with their chants(in an age where technology is superior, the author instill moments that is supernatural), the hardships they had to go through, their everyday life, We also have a bird like race, combining all of these, makes the story better!!!

Book Three, you better have some massive battle scenes!!!

D.T. Read is a new-to-me author. Mountains of the Gods is a military science fiction title.
Since it is the second book in the series, it starts in the middle of things assuming the reader has read book 1. I had not, so I was lost for the first 15-20% of the book. It would have been helpful to have a synopsis of the previous book and a list of characters and their role in the story.
The book is heavily based in Shamanism. There is much about the religious aspects of the book that remind me of the traditional animistic views of many Native American tribes. I was disappointed by the sexual innuendos and sexual tension that was used in part of the book to move the plot forward.
While the concept of the book is an interesting one, I cannot recommend the book because of my concerns.
I received a complimentary copy of Mountains of the Gods. This is my honest review.

Fans of Louis L'Amour's "Last of the Breed" ought to find this enjoyable. I am less sure that anyone who has experienced survival training will enjoy this but I bet they will find the training sequence and the actual hunt all too believable. As for the rest, I am still fascinated at how well the author creates a multicultural intergalactic society that appears to work - even with bigotry, dysfunctional families and apparently conflicting religious beliefs causing trouble. I definitely need to keep reading.

deep and fast like a raging River

While this looks at first glance like just a military sci fi tale it becomes a deep spirit journey. It is filled with powerful images and ideas incorporating spiritual ideas from first peoples. This took me on a deep inward journey. A true masterpiece.
