For most people, meeting the Queen and making her laugh would be the highlight of their life, but not for teacher Steve Hill. Then again, he is not your average schoolteacher.
For more than a decade, Steve's life has been one long high-lights reel of adventure. From climbing mountains, trekking through deserts, wading through rivers in the Amazon Jungle and crossing frozen lakes in the Arctic Wilderness - all to show his pupils that anything is possible.
In his book, 'What's Next Sir?' Steve shares his amazing adventures and the things he has learned along the way about life, about self-doubt, about overcoming challenges and about growth but above all about following your dreams.

I have been teaching now for 27 years and been Deputy Head for 20 years. I feel very privileged to be in the teaching profession and still get the same buzz each and every day. To be in a position where I can do my very best to inspire, instil confidence and help to enable the children to develop themselves both academically and physically and to go on with confidence and hopefully achieve to their full potential is something very special indeed and this is what I strive to do each and every day. I continually strive to inspire the children I teach to be the very best that they can be. I’m continually telling the children that anything is possible and that they should never settle for anything less than their very best as they pursue their dreams! As a result of this each year I embark upon what have become known throughout the school as “Mr Hill’s Challenges” which I hope help to inspire the children way beyond the classroom! These self-funded personal Challenges have mentioned have been the catalyst for my Charity Fundraising which I always involve the children and has helped us raise almost £100,000 for a variety of Charities. I hope this helps to inspire the children further and adds an extra dimension to their lives! These personal Challenges have included:- • Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania – the highest mountain in Africa. • Climbing Mont Blanc – the highest mountain in Western Europe. • Trekking 200 miles through the Sahara Desert. • Climbing Mount Elbrus in Russia - the highest mountain in Europe. • Completing an expedition through the Arctic wilderness with huskies. • Trekking through the Jungles of Borneo. • Climbing Mount Kinabalu – the highest mountain in South East Asia. • Trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp. • Completing the Tenzing Hillary Mount Everest Marathon. • Completing the UVU North Pole Marathon. • Completing the Petra Desert Marathon. • Completing the Uganda Marathon. • Completing the Amazon Jungle Ultra Marathon – 230km self-supported race through the Amazon Jungle • Completing the Arctic Ice Ultra - 230km self-supported race through the Arctic Wilderness • Climbing Mount Toubkal – the highest mountain in North Africa. • Completing the Uganda Marathon. • Completing The Great Norse Run – 9 Marathons in 9 days across the length of Iceland.
This was a really interesting and informative read! It certainly has the inspirational effect it was hoping for as I signed up for a half marathon whilst reading it! What amazing adventures and experiences from a great man! Can’t wait to see what Mr Hill has been up to since the book!
Steve Hill MBE was my step-brothers teacher and I met him at the book launch for this book. I really did enjoy this book and I knew I would. He is such an inspiration not just to his pupils but to me who he has never taught and only met once. I would recommend this to anyone. Steve also wrote this book to boosts children’s love for reading so I would also recommend this book to children about 8-15 years old.
This is one of those rare books that doesn’t just sit in your hands it takes you by the collar and pulls you along for the ride. From the first page to the last, it’s thoroughly engrossing, beautifully written, and impossible to put down. The storytelling moves with the rhythm of a long run: steady, purposeful, sometimes breathless, always forward-leaning.
What makes the book truly special is how vividly Steve’s character shines through every chapter. You don’t just read his experiences you feel them. His passion crackles off the page, his conviction runs deep, and his heart is unmistakably generous. There’s a wild, magnetic sense of adventure woven through the narrative, but it’s grounded in honesty, reflection, and real human warmth.
I was lucky enough to meet Steve during the Uganda Marathon in 2019, and that encounter made this book even more meaningful. In person, he was every bit as inspiring as he is on the page: humble, driven, and quietly powerful, with a sparkle of mischief in his love for challenge and exploration. Reading this book felt like reconnecting with that moment, as if I were running beside him again across red dirt roads under an African sky.
If you love stories of endurance, purpose, and the human spirit pushing beyond comfort, this book will stay with you long after the final chapter. Highly recommended.
An inspirational read. I met Steve at a Scouting event without knowing anything about him. He introduced himself as a primary school teacher. Later he went on stage to tell his story. I was blown away by his adventures, and his message to dream big and keep going. Such a humble man!
