Two Crows Sorrow won the 2020 bronze award for creative non-fiction by the Miramichi Reader.
When not writing, Laura is a communication specialist and journalist in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada. She also teaches communication in the Kinesiology Department at Acadia University.
Laura is a freelance journalist for Saltwire Network, writing stories for newspapers across Atlantic Canada. She can also be heard as the Kentville community contact on CBC Radio, Information Morning.
When not writing, Laura works as a professional home organizer with Your Last Resort and loves to travel and hike, and is always up for an adventure!

t's a cold grey day here in Calgary and the perfect weather to finish reading Laura Churchill Duke - Author latest novel ROOTED IN DECEPTION. Published by Moose House Publications
Based on true events that happened in the early 1900's in rural Nova Scotia, Laura has managed to expertly craft a story of deception, betrayal, poverty and injustice all the while carefully interweaving historical, well-researched facts.
The story centers around an Irish immigrant, we'll call him John because he was known to have many aliases, who was a master storyteller/fibber/fabricator who somehow also manages to be a likeable villain. From his early life in Ireland to the life he tried to make in Nova Scotia he faces trials and tribulations.
What the reader has to decide here is did he weave a web of deceit that caught up with him or was a gruesome deed pinned on him because of his "outsider" status.
Rich in detail and great courtroom scenes this book will be a hit with historical writing fans, courtroom drama fans and anyone who enjoys a the opportunity to question the outcome when seeking justice for a crime.
I found the Afterword particularly interesting because I love hearing about the author's process and how a story, an eventually a book, gets written. With this second offering, the first being TWO CROWS SORROW, I believe Laura Churchill Duke - Author has firmly established herself as a proficient writer of historical crimes.

Another great read by one of my favourite Canadian authors who lives in Annapolis valley Nova Scotia. After reading her book, “Two crows sorrow” I wanted to read more of her books. Rooted in deception was an excellent read which took place in Nova Scotia in the early 1900,s and is a great mystery. Looking forward to reading more of her books.

ROOTED IN DECEPTION - LAURA CHURCHILL DUKE
Wow! I found this book very interesting not only because it is based on a true story but because I love historical fiction and that it took place in Nova Scotia. The author, Laura Churchill Duke, did a wonderful job putting it all together. A lot of time spent on research and prep work went in to writing it as well. It is very descriptive and almost feels like you were actually there. Awesome job, looking forward to reading more of your work. Well done. 5 out of 5 *****

April 21, 2024This story is perfect for true crime and history lovers. The story is set in Windsor, N.S. and paints a horrifying picture of a gruesome murder. Duke's talent at putting you in the middle of the action and painting what sounds like a fictional story, but is based on her meticulous attention to research and details, makes it a great read!
