The body of a young man is found washed up on the mudflats of the Thames, a rosary and a piece of paper the only clues to his identity.
Richard Hopgood is tasked to identify the man which leads him to discover a hidden cadre, a movement to restore a Stuart King, a secret group whose agenda has the taste of rebellion.
Hopgood unravels the tangled threads of duplicity and subterfuge which weave through the streets of Georgian London, a journey which takes him through all strands of society, from the highest office of government to the lowest rat-infested slum, each with their own hidden dangers.
Justice, truth, deceit all play their part as the guilty and the innocent are inexorably drawn back to the lifeblood running through the City, the river Thames...The River of Retribution.
A very in depth and detailed historical tale that kind of puts you right there at the rivers edge, the sad little church, and the filthy streets of this part of London. This is a murder mystery, not my usual reading choice but it was the old London and the time line that drew me in. We not only have a wonderful mystery, we also get a rather detailed tour around London and a bit of a history lesson. Our protagonist does like to wax lyrical as he strides around London, it can be interesting but also a wee bit exhausting at times, and yet the story holds us still. I now try to avoid stories over 300 pages, but this pulled me in the moment I saw the title. Yes, it's long but, for me, it was an absolutely wonderful read.
Excellent plot and good historical context. Enjoyed it a lot. Characters well rounded and engaging. Recommended to everyone who enjoys history and intrigue.
Book was interesting and kept a brisk pace, not allowing me to get bored. I will definitely purchase other books in the series. I hope author allows characters to develop further as well as their relationships.
