Breaking Barriers: The Story of a Liberal Muslim Woman’s Passage in Indian Politics

Rate this book
The autobiography of Nafees Fazal, the first Muslim woman to become a minister in South India, is a fascinating account of her political and personal struggles, her triumphs and achievements. Though coming from a very well-to-do family, she chose politics as her chosen profession – which was her aim in life from the time she was 13 as she idolised the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. But the path ahead for her as a devoted Congress party member was not easy, and strewn with numerous hurdles, including disapproval from her community. Nafees’ account of the many political twists and turns in her path, and the Machiavellian tactics used by her opponents make for absorbing reading. She is frank about what she terms as the ‘downfall’ of the Congress party, under Rahul Gandhi. Nafees is also forthright in talking about her religion, and what she thinks need improving. Though a devout Muslim who reads the namaz daily and has been on Hajj, Nafees is against the hijab. While she has fully backed the Modi government on the triple talaq issue and is for a Uniform Civil Code, she is not in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act. She is also unsparing in her criticism of mullahs and maulvis who she feels have let down the community.

More often than not, it can be seen very evidently that reading about the life of others, or getting a sneak peak of what they have lived through is not only incidental in providing us with a much needed insight, but is also a great motivator to help us in the pursuit of our goals.

Humans are species that are known to learn by imitation. And as such, getting to learn about what is ensuing in the mind of others and trying on the exceptional character attributes of theirs can help us to rehearse our own new and improved selves.

‘Breaking Barriers’ is therefore one such book which can be touted as a great autobiography which will inform and make aware the readers about the milieu of Nafees Fazal, and show us how to deal with all kinds of situations, whatever the life has thrown at us.

We see how from a very young age, Nafees had seen the ugly side of life, and things didn’t get much better even after she was married. However, after giving more than a decade to her family, her dream had still stayed alive, and that was when she decided to step out in the sunshine.

Throughout her journey, Nafees had to struggle a lot, and there was nothing served to her on a silver platter, making her work for every little thing, albeit more than others, especially because of her gender and caste, yet we see how never once she lost her focus, but rather continued with her perseverance and resilience.

As they say, history never repeats itself, but it sure does rhymes, so it is safe to say that even if we don’t encounter the similar set of problems which Nafees faced, as have been depicted in the book, it surely give us an advantage of thinking ahead of time and preparing ourselves, rather than getting completely overwhelmed. Hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It says -The Grass Is Greener on the Other Side. We all have been thought like this, we think rich people's lives are easy, but women's life is the same. Rich or poor, womanhood has always been a target of discrimination. Women have always been wounded and oppressed by their counterparts. Oppression of women is treated like Social norms. Be it educated rich families or uneducated poor people, the exercise of brutality towards women had never been stopped.

We can only imagine how it would feel if a child would be forced to see torture on her mother. It's a most convenient and savage way to suppress a child's growth. This brutality to her mother will remain in the child's heart like a never healed scar. A father can do this only to make the children succumb to despair. The child would never stand up again, the child would never be able to grow up like a strong and complete human being. But Nafees Fazal made a remarkable comeback and hit back at all who made her childhood a traumatic experience.

An astonishing, fiery autobiography as never told before by the author. Gripping inspiring, and subjugated to torture in her personal & political life. Childhood molestation & trauma left scars that never healed making her a feisty woman.
In this book, Nafees Fazal exposes her wounds. She stood head high and feasibly put her traumatic experience of her childhood. I love how courageously she told about her abused childhood. I love her because she never hesitated to tell how her father and the men of her family members tortured her. This bold attitude is astonishing and yet so encouraging.

She has exposed the hardships faced during her political journey hounded by her own community & her colleagues who made her life unbearable till she broke the shackles.
The most thrilling part was the encounter with Veerappan in the year 2000, the abduction of Dr. Rajkumar and some wildlife photographers, tourists, scientists, and 6 forest officials.

In her quirky, bold word author narrated her life story. I love this lucid depiction. Articulated her life story in a very crisp, engrossing way. Nafees Fazal's life story is truly inspiring. A lot of women could relate to her traumatic life and struggle. It will inspire a lot of women not to bend down on their knees, and not to hesitate to shout out about their abused life.

About the book: The autobiography of Nafees Fazal, the first Muslim woman to become a minister in South India, is a fascinating account of her political and personal struggles, her triumphs and achievements.

I was immersed in the book with heady vibrancy of being an independent fierce brave woman the story of Nafees Fazal provided me a inspiring read, but with barely a moment I got a view political and even societal backlash she faced situations hurdles at play!

Nafees is so fierce, devout above all brutally honest and critical in her autobiography talking about the Congress party, her life and her views on the Uniform Civil Code, Citizenship Amendment Act. Most importantly the vivid portrait of the inner psyche and what it means to be Liberal Muslim Woman caught my attention and taught me many lessons.

This spell binding novel that converts real life into a story, rich in profound authenticity and insistent prose, Breaking the Barrier was a breathtaking beauty which I loved wholeheartedly.

“Breaking Barriers” is an autobiography of Mrs. Nafees Fazal, former congress Member of the Legislative Council and first female minister of south India who held various important portfolios in Karnataka government.

In this courageous and bold book author provides her viewpoint on everyone that happened in her life without any filter. Starting from her childhood author tells us about her troubled childhood that seems all good from outside. With that author also explains the plight of women in the society. Even though she came from a very well off family she has a very traumatic childhood. Despite having seen all that initial phase of life she doesn’t give up on her dream of becoming a politician.

As a politician Madam Nafeel Fazal kept her attitude bold and honest, she fought vociferously on issues she felt worth fighting. Bc of her this attitude she faces criticism and backlash but she keeps her opinion same to the end.

From joining congress party after being influenced by Madam Indira Gandhi to almost resigning after having been treated badly by the current party heads and re-joining it. We see her journey with transition of Indian politics and Indian national congress. We not only get to read about authors journey but also what incidents happened in state and central politics and how and what she feels about it.

Overall it is an engrossing and honest book where we get an opportunity to dive into the mind of a courageous female politician who fights against discrimination, sexism, criticism and patriarchy. Everyone should read this book specially young ones who aspire to join politics.

Finally I wanna thank the author for sending me a copy of her book

Review:

The book is an autobiography of Nafees Fazal, the first Muslim woman minister from South India in the Government of Karnataka.

Think about the time of the end of 1970s, the position of women at that time in our society, especially the minority communities, especially think women's position in politics at that time. And it's not very open as it's now in 2023. Even still women in current time faces difficulties, struggles, then think how much a woman had to face to secure her position in her political life and become the first Muslim women minister in Karnataka.

And this book is the detailed account of her political and personal struggles, triumphs and achievements.

This book is very engrossing, as we see from the very beginning Nafees is a very headstrong and fiesty girl and made up her mind to take up a political career from the age of 13 after experiencing a tough childhood.

The book also tells how much disapprovals she faces from her community, how even after the bad tactics used by her opponents, she keeps work hard and determined to become a minister of medical education. She even openly express her opinion on the failure of Congress party in Rahul Gandhi's leardship. She also talks about her mental health issues at that time and how importance it is. She also talks about how supportive her husband is in all through her journey.

And we also see for her work, she's being compared to Mother Teresa.

So the whole book is a very inspiring and insightful read. And the book is so well written and intriguing way that you can easily fly through this book. So definitely a book I would recommend, if you love to read autobiography of renowned person or even if you don't, just read it, it'll be worth it.

When I said yes to this book I had no idea who Nafees Fazal was. The thing that caught my eye was the title of the book "Breaking Barriers". I read the subtitle and agreed to review this book. I didn't even Google who she was. I just wanted to know from the book itself.

Breaking Barriers is a memoir written by Nafees Fazal and co-authored by Sandhya Mendonca. If you don't know who Nafees Fazal is, here's a quick intro about her. Nafees Fazal is an ex-Minister and an ex-MLC in Karnataka. And she was the first Muslim woman to hold these positions in South India.

In Breaking Barriers, she talks about her troubled childhood, early marriage, her dream of one day becoming like Indira Gandhi, her journey into politics and eventually her dream coming true. I always love hearing about how a person wanted to do something at a young age and finally achieved it no matter how long it took. This was exactly what happened with Nafees Fazal. She was 13 when she decided that she'd one day be a politician. And she did it after almost 30 years.

I'm not at all interested in reading about politics but this book is written in a way anyone will find it easy and captivating to read. Though in a lot of places I did not get the political references, I couldn't help but feel inspired by her journey. After all, I didn't pick up this book to learn about politics but to learn about who Nafees Fazal was and what she had achieved, which many of us can only dream of.

It was my first memoir tbh and I loved it! I'll recommend everyone to read this amazing book. Especially each and every woman should give it a read.

⚡ What do you call people who go speaking about a certain topic for days and when that event happens they choose not to pay their attention !? Tell me in the comments below 👇

⚡ You can find a majority of people talking and discussing women empowerment. Speaking up for those who cannot in the current system.

⚡ Yet the irony is that ultimately they fail to recognise the ones which are already established themselves and serve as a living example for the underlying issue.

⚡ The book tells the journey of Nafees Fazal, as a former minister of Karnataka. It digs deep into the state politics and events that one encounters not only as an individual but also as a woman.

⚡ It covers both her personal as well as political journeys, the hardships that lead to where she is now, and is precisely portrayed. It describes a variety of factors that a woman encounters on a daily basis or while making a career for herself regardless of the conditions.

📌 It's a medium-sized book though feels like a short one. It's written in a lucid and enthralling manner. You'll come to witness about some unheard of events, whilst reading it. I like reading biographies and Memoirs so it's a perfect fit for my reading style. If you find yourself related from above mentioned then this one might be a good fit for you.

Nafees Fazal's memoir co-authored by Sandhya Mendonca, resonates with the unapologetically bold voice of the first Muslim woman minister in south India. Mendonca's adept handling allows Fazal's candid narrative to shine, tracing her groundbreaking journey from adversity to political prominence.

Detailing her historic tenure in S M Krishna's Cabinet and navigating the complexities of power, Fazal fearlessly recounts her triumphs and challenges. Her unwavering honesty unveils the hurdles faced as a woman in a male-dominated political landscape, shedding light on societal privilege and the struggle for unimpeded progress.

Political enthusiasts will relish the insider anecdotes encompassing events like the Rajkumar abduction, the contentious Cauvery issue, encounters with Indira Gandhi, and revealing encounters with Rahul Gandhi. Through Fazal's candid reflections, readers encounter a tenacious woman resolutely pursuing her aspirations, painting a portrait of resilience and determination.

This book offers a gripping portrayal of an indomitable figure unafraid to confront the highs and lows of a remarkable life, leaving readers inspired by Fazal's unwavering pursuit of her ambitions despite the odds.

The presence of women in the domain of politics has continued to be one mired in prejudices; something that has been entrenched in the society since prehistoric times, perhaps. "Breaking Barriers" by Nafees Fazal with Sandhya Mendonca is an eye-opening, awe-inspiring tale of Nafees Fazal herself- a former minister from Karnataka and the first Muslim woman minister in South India.

What I really liked about the book, apart from its outstanding content, is the format in which it has been presented. Clearly demarcated chapters, with a detailed backdrop to the historical and political context of India, offered a clear understanding of the ordeals Nafees Fazal had to face to rise to the position of political leadership.

It was an era when there was no proclivity among the leaders to unanimously agree for the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill. Navigating through the thorny paths of troubled childhood to a political journey full of ups and downs, "Breaking Barriers" is a true testimony to the struggles Nafees Fazal had to endure and the barriers (social, economic, and political) that she had to overcome to express her opinions in public, with all the power and right that befit a "woman."

A straight 5 ⭐ to this revolutionary literary work!

The book follows the odyssey of Nafees Fazal. the first Muslim woman to become a minister in South India. A woman has to make her place and she must have courage. The book has encapsulated author’s political journey and how childhood traumas has shaped her life. Not every author is bold enough to share her scars so the author is really brave. I won’t say much, the book is really touching and writing this book was a bold decision . Perhaps staying firm on your dream and working towards it despite the obstacles is a difficult job. It’s not always easy to find light in darkness and hope in despair but one must have faith. After reading this book I deeply felt the author’s pain and everything she has been through. I loved how she did not give up on her dreams and kept working on claiming her place and fighting for women rights.

She is truly an inspiration. Her determination and courage helped her to put every obstacle behind her and come back stronger. It brings attention on deep subjects that needs to be addressed. This autobiography is touching and I would highly recommend it to everyone.

Despite of being a Muslim woman, she did not fear to criticize/point out the mistakes of Fatwas and the talaq system.
