Shana Gorian’s What Am I? Autumn is a delightful celebration of fall’s magic, wrapped in rhyme and sprinkled with curiosity. Each page presents a playful riddle that invites children to guess the answer before turning the page—creating an engaging, interactive reading experience that’s perfect for cozy autumn afternoons.
Through clever verses, Gorian captures the sights, smells, and sensations of the season—crunchy leaves, pumpkin patches, crisp breezes, and warm apple treats. The rhythmic text rolls off the tongue, making it a joy for read-aloud time, while the riddles encourage children to think critically and connect clues with familiar fall symbols.
Illustrations add warmth and charm, painting each riddle with soft, autumnal tones that perfectly complement the text’s cozy atmosphere. The blend of humor and discovery keeps young readers guessing and giggling with every turn.
What Am I? Autumn is more than just a riddle book—it’s an invitation to slow down, observe, and appreciate the simple wonders of the season. Ideal for preschool and early elementary classrooms, or as a fun bedtime game for families who love the colors and coziness of fall.
Creating a book with "autumn riddles" is a good idea - riddles are a great way for young readers to improve their reading comprehension, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving skills. Autumns are seasons of abundance and the author had a much better and richer "harvest" of fall symbols to select from. (pumpkins were presented on two out of fourteen spreads and tractors, ponies, jackets, sweaters, and pies are not the best representatives of the fall seasons). Some riddles in WHAT AM I? are educational and entertaining, while others need better clues - they will be difficult even for readers with excellent metalinguistic awareness. The illustrations are a good visual map of the publication. Their colour scheme is excellent. They also provide additional details and clues and are inviting and lighthearted.
A fantastic interactive book for young readers! My daughter has a blast with the riddles, and it's a great way to boost her learning without her even realizing it.
