Secret Messages. Family Secrets. A Halloween Night Trip to the Family Crypt.
Readers don't be tricked by the title of this book. It is not your typical horror story, it is one with a hook. A complicated telling of love and romance, that led to murder from just one dance.
Every town has one.
That old house in the neighborhood, on the hill, or down the lane with a past shrouded in mystery and tragedy.
Dixon, Illinois has such a house . . .
Sela Whitley returns home for vacation, intent on relaxing and reconnecting with all those dear to her.
The last thing she expects is to find romance with the handsome new neighbor or to stumble onto a century old family secret.
As her relationship with James Standford grows, so does the mystery, and together they learn the shocking truth behind the grisly past of . . .The Haunted Hillerman House.
I had read Shannon Baileys Forever Davids a few months ago and was told she had written another book away from the paranormal. Since I loved her writing style and her flair for wonderful descriptive pictures, I decided to get The Haunted Hillerman House. As its description, every town has its big, scary house that all kids are fearful of. Our heroine Sela lives in the Big City, Chicago and comes home to the small town of Dixon Illinois to celebrate her 30th Birthday with her family and friends . Her mother tells her of a newcomer to town and the new owner of the Hillerman House. Sela meets James Stanford young, single, drop dead geogeous.. This story is a love story and these two people learning about themselves and the Ghosts of Hillerman House. It is exceptional to detail, fun to read and the story has quite a twist at the end. Miss Bailey is quite a new talent and I await her next book with great expectation
This book was a delight to read. It wasn't quite what I expected and it was a very pleasant surprise. This independent work from Shannon Bailey will leave you guessing until the very end. Rachel and Levi are very compelling characters and their story is one that should be told. A gripping mystery that has you holding on to the edge of your seat.
This was great for a small book.I read it very quickly. I'm from Dixon, IL and lived on the same block where it took place. It felt like I knew the characters, like they were the family next door. The author's dedication to her research of the town in all aspects was phenomenal, and absolutely showed in her writing.
An awesome suspense/mystery story, just as good as another book- Shadowbrook Manor by Shannon Bailey! Really like her writing style! It was hard to put this book down!
This is the first time I have downgraded a book due to poor editing. And the word "poor" is being kind. I don't mind the occasional gaffe due to oversight, but when a book has obviously been proofread using a standard PC-based program, I draw the line. For instance, the word "your" instead of "hair" which took me a bit to figure out - is inexcusable. This is the first time I've experienced editing issues taking away from the story, and it was frustrating. The story showed some promise, but didn't deliver. The title would lead one to believe this was a ghost story - it was not - not a spook in sight. It was a romance with a bit of a mystery involved. IF it had been presented that way my expectation would have been met and this would have received at least 3 stars. It was entertaining, albeit predictable, and I liked the characters.
