The civil war in Mozambique finally came to an end in 1992. Yet for its 16 million people, another struggle was just to repair the shattered fabric of their lives and to forge a truly Mozambican nation.

Rachel Waterhouse is a journalist and researcher. Married to a Mozambican, with two young children, she has lived and worked in Mozambique for seven years. She observed the impact of the civil war and the progress of the peace process at first hand. For this book she travelled all over the country to interview ex-combatants from both sides, official mediators, and civilians from a wide range of communities.
Rising from the Ashes is illustrated with specially commissioned photographs by Mozambican photographer Carlos Mhula and international photographer Jenny Matthews.
