Excerpt From Chapter 3 Fearful And Frightful

They walked the stonewall boundary line until it became just a wrought-iron fence. Randy could see the Manor and thought it was amazing.

The fence was too high for Randy to climb, so his cousins picked him up and placed him on the other side of the fence. They were being so nice, and he didn't know why. There was a section of trees just on the other side of the fence, but you could still see the Manor. They began to walk through the tree area until it became an open area.

“Come on, the apples are down this way.” As they got closer to the apple trees the lights came on outside the manor, and they all froze.

The cousins started running back towards the tree line. Randy began running back as well. He stepped in a gopher hole and fell. “He called out to his cousins to come to help him, but they just kept running and laughing; leaving him there all alone.

As they climbed back over the fence, Steven said, “We need to go get dad and let him know what happened.”

“What?” Terry replied, “Are you crazy? You want to get your tail end whipped with the belt? We'll just tell him Randy got upset with a crying fit and left the house, and we don't know where he is at. I'm not going to get in trouble for that dweeb.”

Randy was scared and alone, his ankle was hurting, and tears were falling from his eyes. He heard someone come out of the Manor and immediately lay down on the ground, hoping he wouldn't be seen and that he could at some point make it to the trees. When he heard a rustle through the leaves of someone or something coming towards him, he tried to stay calm, but he was frozen with fear. What if they were right that kids went missing at the manor, he was hoping they were just trying to scare him. He was scared enough to be in their house so, he didn't need any more help with that.

As he lay there, he could feel someone patting his back, he raised up slowly with tears running down his face. Without looking up to see who it was, he said “I'm sorry for being on your property please don't hurt me.”

He then sheepishly looked up and staring at him was a big St. Bernard dog who gave him a big lick across the face. Then he heard a voice “Phillip what you got down there?” Phillip, the St. Bernard, began barking. Ruff, ruff, ruff as he wagged his tail.

Randy looked back and saw a tall slender gentleman walking his way. He walked with confidence. He didn't look old, just somewhat old like his dad. The man leaned down “Looks like your friends ran off and left you.”

Randy replied, “They're not my friends there my cousins.” He began crying even more.

“Are you hurt?”

Randy replied, “Yes sir. It hurts from when I fell after stepping in the hole.”

“Hey, there's no shame in crying when you are hurt, even Jesus wept.”

“That's in the Bible. Everyone thought Lazarus had died, but Jesus said he was only sleeping and called for him to come out of the tomb, and he walked out in his grave clothes.”

The man said “That's right! Jesus was crying because he loved Lazarus.”

Randy then noticed someone else walking towards them, he wasn't tall, more on the plump side, but very jolly,

“What you got there Mr. Grant?”

Randy looked at the man and asked “You're not going to make me go missing, are you? My cousins said kids who come on the property go missing.”

Mr. Grant looked at him with a smile and said, “No you're not going to be hurt, or go missing. I don't think Phillip would let anyone hurt you. He’s pretty protective and if he has licked you across the face, you're a friend to him. I've never seen him lick your cousin's faces. He just chases them out of the yard. Well, it's pretty chilly out here. What's your name?”

“Randy.”

“That's a really nice name, Randy. Let's get you up and see if you can stand on it ok?”

Randy stood up, but it was too painful to stand on. Mr. Grant then said, “Well you've got an important decision to make here young man.”

“What?”

“Do you want a piggyback or a horsey back ride so we can get you out of the chill and send someone for your dad to come to get you?”

“My dad's not here he’s in another county helping a friend, he's a Pastor. I am staying with my uncle Terry. He's mean.”

“Well, let's get you in the Manor and then we’ll see what can be done ok? So, Benji over here is the piggyback ride, and I am the horsey back ride.”

Benji began laughing, “OK young laddie do you want to ride with this wonderful jolly Englishman or the Yank horsey?” Mr. Grant and Benji began laughing.

“I'll take a horsey ride. That won't hurt your feelings will it Mr. Benji?”

“No, lad, and it's just Benji, I am Mr. Grant's butler, driver, and chef. Mr. Grant and I have known each other since we were youngsters. When I needed help, he showed up and gave me a helping hand. He’ll give you a helping hand now laddie.”

“My name is Randy, not laddie.”

Benji replied, “I know your name is Randy. Laddie isn’t a replacement for your name it’s what in my country we call young boys.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that.”

“There is no bullying in the Grant Manor, you’ll be addressed as Randy with respect. Mr. Grant, he doesn’t like bullies.”

This was a good spiritual allegory and I enjoyed it. Evans has a unique writing style that engages the reader and forces you to read carefully and thoughtfully, which is important for this type of allegorical tale. The characters were well written and the story was compelling.
