"Some may ask where I get the authority to compile such a work, and attach such lofty claims to it. I have no advanced business degrees myself, but I have labored in an assortment of metaphorical vineyards over the course of the past four decades, from entry level to senior management positions, in government and in the private sector, and I have paid attention to the commonalities and repetitive patterns around me.
In an era when hit television programs like The Office and award-winning novels like And Then We Came To The End are documenting the futility and anomie that is so often a part of our shared work experience, and the economic chaos all around us demonstrates the inadequacy of so-called professional expertise, the universal verities of business presented in MBA IN A BOOK are more relevant than ever."
“I’ve been in publishing for more than three decades, but I try to keep current.”
So wrote Les Pockell about himself for an in-house publication. Les didn’t just “keep current” – he had an encyclopedic knowledge of everything past, present and future in every field imaginable. He had an insatiable appetite for learning, and for passing along all the wisdom he’d accumulated to the editors he worked with and mentored over his many years in publishing.
His vitality was contagious; his opinions were strong; his brilliance was dazzling. He was well-loved by so many, and will be deeply missed.
With a grandiose hardcover, mesmerizing title and sexy smart yet short one liners, one would expect Leslie Pockell's book to do justice to its new found customers of the book. Sadly this is not the case.
Where the book seems to be punctuated with snappy attention grabbing quotes, the book does an amazing job of misleading the readers into believing it is a guide for the educationally blind into the over-glorified world of academic qualification. It not only fails to deliver what is promises on its cover, it proves to be nothing but free yet selected internet copy pasted quotations.
So do I recommend this book?
Well, yes and no.
No if you are looking to become enlightened as a smart MBA who get certified after reading a $19.00 book with one line per page.
No if you are looking at 'value-for-money'
And No, if you are looking for something new.
However, for the strangest reasons whatsoever, I found this book addictive enough that I wanted to complete reading it in the one hour that I did take it up. And I didn't want to put it down till I read it all.
So, if you are seeking a book that may just wake up a small thought or give you one small piece of advice you have been asking others but have not yet heard what lay ringing inside your head - I would say, pick up this book.....read a few lines.....and if you have the patience, complete reading the whole book and then put it back.
So, overall considering the authors sad unacceptable attempt at trying to sell his book filled with nothing but with free internet based quotations with an over-priced despicable price tag and a inappropriate and misleading title, I would give it an overall rating 2 out 10 and would suggest, next time he comes out with another book, teach him a lesson - borrow it.
This book is just a collection of inspirational quotes that fall under categories related to business, sales and leadership. It's a super quick read, and it does include some very good quotes. Really not worth the cover price. I only paid a quarter for it, and that's about right as you could read all these quotes for free on BrainyQuote.
This was not anything like I expected. It's basically just a collection of quotes from various people. The quotes do deal often with business, sales or leadership, but I just don't know how useful a book it is, and I definitely think the title MBA in a Book is misleading.
It's a good book with some really good 'words of wisdom' from a variety of famous investors, leading businessmen, and political and thinkers. It has the capacity to interest the readers and leave them with enhanced interest to read more about business and investment.
I didn't see any "MBA" in this book; it's only a collection of quotations from well known authors, philosopher, businessmen. Good book if you buy it not as an "MBA in a book" but as a collection of good business quotations in a single place. Easy read; single quotation per page
