Sneak Peek
Barbara opened the door as I reached for the doorbell, letting the chain catch so I could only see her face.
“Mitch.”
Her voice was so quiet it was barely audible. I wouldn’t have known she’d even spoken if I hadn’t seen her lips move.
“Barbara, what’s going on?”
“Something’s happened.” She glanced to either side as if afraid somebody might be eavesdropping on our conversation. I could appreciate her desire for confidentiality.
“Open the door. I’ll come in.”
Barbara shook her head. “You can’t. You can’t get involved… in this.”
My eyes narrowed. “Involved in what?”
Barbara closed her eyes, and she shook her head again. “I didn’t know who else to call.”

I do love Mitch. He is one of those genuinely nice lawyers who go above and beyond for their clients. Never more so was that fundamental aspect of his personality and work ethic called upon...until this book. When his ex-fiancee looks like she is going to be charged with a slam-dunk murder conviction, Mitch never loses his faith in her innocence, and it takes all of his gut instinct and nouse to fight her way out of this situation. While handling another case as well, Mitch is certainly juggling, and this all comes to a head in a gripping and addictive narration.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Great start to the year.
First, I want to thank author for clarifying my curiosity about the 2 women, Britney and Barbara. But author made it extremely difficult for me to finish this book. It took me at 3 days when I usually read a book in a day depending on how thick it is. I got burnout with the name Barbara. It seems every page had her name at least 3 times. If this book had 200 words, Barbara name was 100 of the 200. I’ve never read 1 person name so many times in a book b4. I have an aunt named Barbara & from this day forward, I’m not calling her Auntie Barbara again. I tried to skip as many pages as I could when it came to her. I only continue bc I was interested in Vice case and I wanted to know who killed Thomas and Kinsey. I still don’t understand their deaths. Mitch still my man but author you turned him into a love sick puppy behind Barbara. I was disappointed how he was lagging on Vince case. I always been team Ellie bc she knows him and understands him. She will treat him better than Britney or Barbara. She won’t put demands on him and will work beside him. She won’t make him choose between his job and her, she’s not selfish.
Way too much of the story is about his emotional involvement with the current or not so current woman. I'm never sure if this guy is writing a "legal thriller", or a "romance" novel. His weird infatuation with his old "loves" is really weird. His inability to know who he's attracted to and make a commitment makes him look like a flake. It really takes away from the story. His frequent use of "gonna" is incredibly annoying, "gonna" is a colloquialism i.e. "Not gonna happen." Most people don't use it continually in their speech, especially well-educated people such as lawyers. Because of the constant use of gonna in these books I've become very aware of listening to how people speak. I have noticed that most people say "going to", I'm going to help you; What are you going to do?; etc. Instead, gonna is used continually throughout the story and it is very off-putting and annoying! I will say Mitch Turner books are easy to read, intriguing, and there are always a few twists which is what keeps me coming back. I just wish I could enjoy his books without the weird romance and "gonna" issues! If I ever do, I'll finally be able to give him five stars!
Mitch Turner is a good guy, but spends a lot of time in his own head....and he has A lot of previous girlfriends who also spend a lot of time in his head...but he is a serious guy, dedicated to the law.
I never wanted to put my book down Keep reading it. Very suspenseful. Keeps grabbing you. In this story there are several diff stories going on Barbra, Vince, Ellie Very suspenseful Keep reading to find out what’s going on with them
Fascinating murder involving drugs and relatives and romance.
Confusing and intriguing storyline. Drugs and personal interactions. Leading up to the complicated ending. I want a happy romantic ending for Mitch and Susie.
First time I have chosen this author and this series. I enjoyed the book and the story line. Mitch Turner is a well developed character as are the other characters.
Great and intriguing story. Follows closely after book 3. Many unexpected twists. A real page-turner. Offers both courtroom drama and police proceedurals. Highly recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this mystery with all its twists and turns. I especially liked when Mitch stopped speaking about himself in the third person.
