Organizational Development in Higher Education: Perspectives, Practice and Potential

Rate this book
Comprehensive and well-written, Organizational and Development in Higher Education is an authoritative and supportive text covering both theoretical and evidence based practical perspectives for students of Higher Education Masters and PhD programs. It is also a supportive and informative text for those in higher education administration, leadership and management, faculty and staff development responsible for organisational development and change who are considering more holistic approaches to organizational development and effectiveness across the whole university. The book takes an international perspective and draws in expertise from around the world to provide the reader with an invaluable addition to their understanding of universities and of organisational development approaches and tools.

Thackwray and Huxley bring together their considerable knowledge and experience of higher education to probe and address the following questions:

What is a university?

Can a university be managed, led and developed in the same way as other organizations?

What kinds of tools and approaches do universities use to improve themselves?

How well do these tools work? The book is structured in broad sections reflecting the sub-title (Perspectives, Practice and Potential) and the mix of theoretical and practical content. Each section provides an introduction functions as a 'roadmap' through the content and some general commentary from the authors on the broad topic areas in that section.

The introduction is followed by a series of 'perspectives', a synthesis of theory and viewpoints from a range of relevant academics and practitioners, with narrative, exemplars and prompts for reflection or exercises followed by bibliographies, reading lists and pointers to additional resources. Each chapter within the three sections will break down into accessible units described as 'modules'. This format creates an easily accessible structure that enables the reader to 'dip in' easily into standalone sections, chapters or modules giving a pedagogically functional structure.

The book will be accompanied by a Companion Website featuring video clips and other resources related to section content, and these will be referenced as appropriate in the main text.
