This book is a starter for those who want to know some main concepts used in planning as a distinct discipline. Although, not all those concepts are native to planning. Planning adopts concepts from others disciplines, including public policy, economics, and urban designs. Therefore, we may not be able to differentiate which ones that can be called as a 'planning concept'. But I found this book has tried its best to introduce to the recent concepts that planners are talking about or familiar with recently. We may call that some of these concepts elaborated as 'buzz words' in planning education and practice. Some concepts may be too common to find in other disciplines, such as 'sustainable development' and 'designations', and 'systems and complexity'. Overall, this book is a helper to ones who want to familiarize with planning as a discipline, with explanations how planning practice and education used the concepts in various contexts.

A good overview of the key theoretical points, clearly designed to encourage students to think more critically about some of the more linear issues in planning. Excellent structure and good pointers to further reading throughout. In general a good starter text. Some chapters are more clearly explained than others though, with a few unnecessary repetitions.
