Missals from the Dark

Rate this book
A dragon-riding AI may hold the balance in a twisted Australia, where the sky is freezing and old foes are rising.

'Letters from the Light is one of my favourite sci-fi books with its compelling characters and twisting plot. I was, therefore, first in line to read the sequel, Missals from the Dark. Bravo for another 5-star sci-fi wonder.' Caroline Noe, author of the Canellian Eye series.

Following the Light War, Aggy is working hard to restore peace to Australis. Only, the climate is failing, a dragon-riding android is trying to kill her, and old enemies are working to bring back the days when light was rationed, and disabilities inflicted for control. Can Aggy unite the disparate races once again? If only she had more letters from the Light to guide her. Perhaps help is closer than she thinks.

Missals from the Dark is the stunning sequel to the dystopian scifi novel Letters from the Light.

'The melange of ethnicities and cultures blended with concerns that reflect, all too glaringly, our own real-world problems was brilliant. I hope there's a sequel to Letters from the Light, I'd love to know what happens next!' TK Toppin, author of the Jax Marlin series.

Its coming!!!

Finally the book you've all been asking for - Missals from the Dark - sequel to Letters from the Light. Available October 1st.

We pick up the story three years later. The climate is failing, Kohl is missing, Spectra and Governor Pallas are down in Melbourne bringing back true night, and a dragon riding numan is trying to kill Aggy. If only the rebels had more Letters from the Light to guide them. Perhaps help is closer than they think.

If you love your scifi a bit on the fantasy side, with strong women, diverse characters and a liberal dose of social discussion then this is the book for you.

Pre-order now on Amazon.

By the way if you are wondering about me...

My novels are mostly set in the sci-fantasy genre, but I only use science as the backdrop against which characters struggle with the contemporary issues of class, gender and power. Actually it’s all a little bit dystopian.

I am a passionate believer that all our small lives are connected, valuable and critical to the collective journey. So thank you for connecting with me and reading my work.

Shel Calopa's Letters from the Light is one of my favourite sci fi books with its compelling characters and twisting plot. I was, therefore, first in line to read the sequel, Missals from the Dark.

Rejoining Harper, Kohl, Sam, Aggy and friends not long after that shattering conclusion, the reader is swiftly plunged back into mortal struggle as politics and out of control weather wrap their icy fingers around the reeling survivors and the battle begins. Extraordinary new characters join those we love, some strange friends, others hideous enemies.

Calling on elements of folk lore, adventure, faith and discrimination, the narrative rattles along at a headlong pace and, at times, cuts the heart out.

Absolutely amazing must read. I was immersed from the beginning to end and had trouble putting it down. Unique plot and fast paced with lots of twists and turns. Can’t wait for another sequel. Highly recommend!

This is a sweeping epic of good versus evil with a panoply of characters. Governor Pallas makes a great protagonist, as he cares nothing for his drug-addict wife, or his grown children. All he wants is to maintain his power, his hold over the persecuted lower classes, and keep the love of the pampered upper classes. Spectra makes a perfect evil villain. He's stereotypically evil, sadistic, and narcissistic. He uses Pallas for his own means.

All the while, the various Good Guy characters are busy trying to set right all the evils of their world, whether it's coming from numans, AIs, humans, or the environment.

My only complaint is character names that are too similar when you have as many characters as this one does, are highly confusing. Bell and Bess. Spectra and Sedna.

I eagerly awaited the release of Shel Calopa's sequel to Letters From The Light, and was not disappointed. Bringing the "ensemble cast" from the previous book back together again, we follow the epic tale of a hidden worldlet as they once again battle evil, but it doesn't help when this time, the AI is corrupted and chooses violence. Or the AI dragon on which she rides upon to dispense her destruction. Once again, I marvelled at Calopa's imagination and incredible world-building, and the many unique cultures and sub-cultures she'd created. And now, I eagerly await the sequel!
