The Glory of His Life

Rate this book
"When Christ, who is our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also with him be manifested in glory" (Col. 3.4). Where the life of Christ is, there is the manifestation of glory. Though the full manifestation is yet to come, we may enjoy the glory of His life even now.

In this volume, which is a selection of messages culled from many given by Watchman Nee throughout his long years of faithful ministry to the church, we are enabled to see some of the manifold aspects of the glory of the life of Christ in us. Part I shows us how the righteousness of God has been manifested towards all who believe through faith in Jesus Christ. Further, we are shown how Christ is made our righteousness, and how as a result we become the righteousness of God. Part II proceeds to disclose how Christ is made to be our wisdom; a wisdom which includes not only righteousness but also sanctification and redemption. While Part III concludes with an unveiling of the meaning of resurrection and the power of His resurrection.

This book is presented as a companion volume to the author's Practical Issues of This Life. As this life of ours has its many problems, so the life of Christ in us transcends and translates them into glory.

Watchman Nee (Chinese: 倪柝聲; pinyin: Ní Tuòshēng; Foochow Romanized: Ngà̤ Táuk-sĭng; 1903–1972) was a Chinese Christian author and church leader during the early 20th century. He spent the last 20 years of his life in prison and was severely persecuted by the Communists in China. Together with Wangzai, Zhou-An Lee, Shang-Jie Song, and others, Nee founded The Church Assembly Hall, later which would be also known as the "Local churches" (Chinese: 地方教會). or more commonly as (聚會所) meaning "assembly hall"

Born into a Methodist family, Watchman Nee experienced a religious revival, and joined the Church of Heavenly Peace, Fuzhou in 1920 at age 17 and began writing in the same year. In 1921, he met the British missionary M. E. Barber, who was a great influence on him. Through Miss Barber, Nee was introduced to many of the Christian writings which were to have a profound influence on him and his teachings. Nee attended no theological schools or Bible institutes. His knowledge was acquired through studying the Bible and reading various Christian spiritual books. During his 30 years of ministry, beginning in 1922, Nee traveled throughout China planting churches among the rural communities and holding Christian conferences and trainings in Shanghai. In 1952 he was imprisoned for his faith; he remained in prison until his death in 1972.

This is classic Watchman Nee Christian Living writing. With Watchman you get sound Christian precepts and principles from The Holy Bible quite thoroughly explicated. In this particular book he visits the importance of taking the perspective of the person of Christ as our sufficiency and not just a source of our needs. He explains how our relationship and being "in Christ," means we are in a host of other things than just the literal. Plus it was pretty short. This is good reading for beginning Christians with a little bit of foundational scriptural knowledge.

On the downside, Watchman's thoroughness can feel long- winded. However, I do realize he is using every appeal for the understanding of scripture and precepts so that everyone understands and no one is left out.

I only experienced a few things in the book that I was wishy- washy on as far as accuracy, or that I thought he could have left out. Nevertheless, I found nothing stated that was flat out wrong, though I am not a scholar.

Great stuff. 5 stars.

Of all of the Watchman Nee titles I own and have read, this may very well be my favorite. As most of his books are, Glory of His Life is a compilation of some of his presentations to students and the Church. I suppose I enjoyed most of all his discussions on Christ our righteousness, dead to the law, and the power of the resurrection. They were aspects of the Christian life I'd not understood and I received insight to these matters I hadn't known previously. I don't always fully live those particular gifts, but I understand them better. This book was helpful in furthering my trust in God and realizing I haven't the need to 'strive' so much as to obey.
