Abused Addicted Free: The Inspiring True Story of Trudy Makepeace

Rate this book
He grabbed my throat with one hand and pushed the edge of a blade to my neck with the other. “One wrong move and I’ll cut your throat!” I felt the cold edge of the knife against my flesh. I shivered as he pushed the tip deeper into my skin. “Who do you think you are?” he shouted. Fear gripped my heart as he traced the blade across my throat; it could all be over in seconds.
Months later when Trudy Makepeace arrived at the girl’s home in Tredegar, a staff member on duty at the time wondered how she was still alive. “Trudy was skin and bone, with fear in her eyes I have never seen someone so destroyed by drugs.“
This true story of transformation is marked by the mercy and miraculous power of God making Trudy a true champion of the broken, destitute, and marginalised.

About: autobiography. Real story of her life and how her relationship with God saved her from years of abuse, drugs, homelessness, sex work/ modern slavery, and so much more. She got through it and if she can so can her readers. She’s now a profound pastor/minister bringing the light, word, strength and power of God to those who need it most.

Opinion: one of my favourite books to date, has completely changed my life and freed me of my own addictions. Put a strength in me to do good. It touched my heart and soul so deeply, she’s honest and raw. I'm very thankful for her sharing her story and will be recommending the read to everyone Christian or not. I was lucky enough to meet Trudy as she's a Pastor at E5 church in Bristol. She is an incredible woman with such beautiful energy to her, so welcoming and inspiring.

This excellent book was uplifting, encouraging and enjoyable. It's the horrific but extraordinary story of a woman finding her way out of addiction and hopelessness through faith in God (plus the input of some wonderful people, and much of her own hard work too).
Trudy Makepeace describes her life plainly and honestly, and this is often shocking, because of the nature of the circumstances she found herself in, from childhood onwards. She is never sensationalist, but also doesn't gloss over the grubbiness of her previous life. She writes with great truthfulness - for example, depicting relationships of great fondness between people caught in cycles of addiction, without romanticising their lives.
I read this book on recommendation from a lady I've worked with on another book project, and I'm really glad I did. It is very real, very heartening, but there is a challenge there too - how many assumptions do we make about people we meet who are actually living with addiction or past trauma? How many failed attempts do we make at trying to help people live lives we think would be better for them? And in the end, what really works in transforming a life? Highly recommended.

This is such a powerful autobiography. It is far from appropriate to write a “book review” as such. It would be wrong to critique the writing, the style or the content (which is all fine by the way). This is a frighteningly real-life story, not withholding any punches regarding her extremely difficult background, which makes the turnaround in her life all the more amazing.
The first half is a difficult read, hearing the desperate stories of Trudy’s life. This is then contrasted by the second half which is truly inspirational, realising what it really means to receive the depth of God’s love, that he never gives up on anyone, that no one is beyond salvation and there is always hope. In this context it is truly miraculous. Many tears were shed reading it, and no doubt many tears were shed writing it too.
There is no messing about with this one. Don’t be under the impression that this is at all sugar coated …

Moving and miraculous

This book is an amazing testimony of the power of God to heal some of the sickest in spirit among us. The author had a horrible drug addiction and supplemented it by stealing and selling her precious body. Jesus met her where she was at and totally changed her heart and life. Well-written and totally uplifting.

An amazing testimony. A very real and raw examination of addiction and abuse without any buffers and the capacity for spiritual transformation, healing and redesigning a whole existence overflowing into so many others. Really powerful and uplifting.
