It is 1941, and friends Adam, Joe, Dale, and Catherine are similar to most young adults. College, dating, and fast cars are what they know and live for. And in Chicago, Illinois, the near center of America, world conflict seems merely a distant rumor.

But as turmoil in Europe develops into full-scale war, Chicago suddenly abounds with talk of America's entering the fight. Drawn by the promise of freedom and the allure of battle, Joe and Dale join the Army, Adam the Marines, and Catherine the Naval Nurse Service. Far away from home and facing the reality of war in all its horror, they find the world a frighteningly big and unforgiving place, and what began as a quest for freedom becomes a battle to stay alive in one of the bloodiest wars of the twentieth century.

Impressive

After a short naive opening that smacked of some Andy Hardy movie of 1940, the story became more dramatic, showing that the author had done his research, which I can verify as being accurate, since I was a youngster absorbing it all as WWII broke out. Few novels give us a look at basic training, which hadn’t changed much for the next decade. I’m looking forward to the next installment!

This book explains very vividly what could happen to a group of friends that have found themselves between a rock and a hard place. Much of this book is based in the States, but soon enough WWII begins and the group of friends enlist to escape the wrath of a angry banker that has turned their basket over and shaken it. This banker is quite mad about his wife and a business deal, you'd have to read the book to learn why. Also the book will skip in the time line very hard to pick up when the book starts off in the middle of the time line, then fills you in as you go.
