Lady Isabella’s Ogre (a novel)

Lady Isabella Knox enjoys her independence. She collects strays—dogs, kittens, runaway brides—but she has no intention of collecting a husband.

Major Nicholas Reynolds has had enough of soldiering; all he wants now is a bride … but his scarred face sends young ladies fleeing.

When a slip of Isabella’s tongue brands the major an ogre, his chances of marriage disintegrate. Determined to put things to rights, Isabella sets out to revive the major’s marriage prospects. How better than for the two of them to indulge in a make-believe flirtation? They both know it’s not real, so where’s the danger?

But Isabella is soon in over her head—and so is Major Reynolds.

Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes (a novella)

When Lieutenant Mayhew boards the stagecoach bound for Southampton he anticipates an uneventful journey. True, he’s carrying kittens, but it’s only eighty miles. What could possibly go wrong?

He’s not expecting to meet the enchanting Miss Willemina Culpepper. Nor is he expecting the kittens to be quite so good at vanishing.

Mayhew has faced many challenges in his career as a soldier. Traveling from London to Southampton should not be difficult. Except that it is.

Lady Isabella’s Ogre
Lady Isabella Knox enjoys her independence. She collects strays dogs, kittens, runaway brides but she has no intention of collecting a husband, she’s perfectly happy with her life. Major Nicholas Reynolds returns from the Battle of Waterloo a hero. He’s had enough of soldiering; all he wants now is a bride & to live away from death & destruction but his scarred face sends young ladies fleeing. When a slip of Isabella’s tongue brands the major an ogre and his chances of marriage disintegrate she sets out to undo the harm she inadvertently caused. How better to revive the major’s marriage prospects than for the two of them to indulge in a make-believe flirtation?
A well written well paced story that drew me in from the start & had me enthralled all the way through. The characters are well fleshed & likeable, Nicholas is honourable & straight as a die so there was always going to be a problem about Isabella’s lie. Isabella is beautiful, generous, sympathetic & caring. The two are made for each other but they know their futures are set in stone she as a spinster aunt & he wedded to a young mouldable wife! I particularly enjoyed how the pair came to like & respect each other. The story is quite straight forward with no mystery to solve just a couple of secrets to cause problems. It was also enjoyable for the heroine to be older & happy with her life, no wicked family member making her life difficult or hidden past.

Lieutenant Mayhew's Catastrophes
When Lieutenant William Mayhew boards the stagecoach bound for Southampton he anticipates an uneventful journey. True, he’s carrying two kittens, but it’s only eighty miles. He’s not expecting to meet the enchanting Miss Willemina Culpepper. Nor is he expecting the kittens to be quite so good at vanishing.
A lovely short story. We met William in Lady Isabella's Ogre & this novella tells of his journey to take the kittens to his twin nephew & niece. Missing kittens, missed stagecoach, rain, mud & fords made the journey very eventful but also gave Will & Willie time to get to know each other. I read it in a sitting & thoroughly enjoyed it & it’s Purr- fect for whiling away a couple of hours. I first read this lovely novella in the Love& Other Perils duet
Two delightful reads Purrfect for whiling away a few hours

I enjoyed reading this box set of two previously published books by the author.

The storylines and the author‘s narration are fun to read, I loved the characters and the kittens.

If you like opposites attract and insta love stories with lively kittens, you will certainly enjoy this humorous box set of historical romances.

LADY ISABELLA‘S OGRE

One wrong word in the wrong place

After years of serving at war, Nicholas returns to England. He is disciplined and stern. All he wants now is to live a peaceful life with a young and quiet wife and future children.
Isabella is a confident spinster and a well aknowledged member of the ton with no intention to wed. She rescues stray and abandoned animals and also people as it would seem…
But Nicholas plans go awry. His fiancée elopes and finds shelter with Isabella. The way the girl describes Nicholas makes Isabella think he is a ogre. And unfortunately, this nickname slips past her lips at a ball. Nicholas becomes the laughing stock of society and Isabella feels guilty, so she offers to help him by pretending that he is her beau. But Nicholas must never find out that she is responsible for his predicament...

A lovely story with very likable characters and lots of pets. It was fun to follow their interactions and how their relationship turned from partnership into love, both beating around the bush and unable to acknowledge their feelings.

LIEUTENANT MAYHEW’S CATASTROPHES

Never travel with lively kittens

Lieutenant William Mayhew has received two kittens from Isabella as a gift for her niece and nephew and is transporting them in a basket in a stagecoach. But it's not as easy as expected.
Ms. Willie Culpepper is the daughter of a colonel and diplomat. She has always accompanied her father and has seen much of the world. After her father's death, she is on her way to a new job as a companion to the daughters of a diplomat, which will allow her to travel again. Having grown up among soldiers, she thinks she is immune to their charms, but Will is handsome, friendly, humorous and charming with his kittens.
During a break, they miss the carriage's departure, and together they experience a series of mishaps as they follow the carriage.
Will is fascinated by Willie, she is resilient, good-natured and humorous, laughing at their misadventures, but he considers himself too insignificant for her. She would never trade a diplomat‘s life for becoming a soldier‘s wife, would she now...

An charming instalove roadtrip romance with very likable characters and a lovely pair of kittens as side characters. The plot is entertaining and witty. It was so much fun to follow their mishaps as the story progressed.

Kittens unite these two stories. I preferred Lady Isabella's Ogre, probably as it's longer and the characters felt more rounded. It is easy to see how a casual word uttered in the wrong place could have unintended consequences and Lady Isabella does all she can to atone for her error. Feels only fitting that she should benefit from trying to do the right thing. Harriet the young woman she rescues is a wet blanket but Lady Isabella having a strong personality balanced this and as Harriet is so vulnerable being a wet blanket is excusable.
Lieutenant Mayhew's catastrophe was a fun short story though I think it was far more Miss Culpepper's catastrophe since nothing that transpired would have been much of a catastrophe at all had not Miss Culpepper been present, men are allowed scrapes. The two main characters are a little too good to be true, being in pain brings out the worst in most people but far better than having high maintenance characters that swoon at the first bit of mud. The pompous bad guy is just a caricature and the ending felt a bit rushed but Scout the kitten on her own would make this worth reading. I enjoy Emily Larkin's writing and will look out for her next book.

“Love and Other Surprises” by Emily Larkin
Two fun stories

"Lady Isabella's Ogre" by Emily Larkin
This story has it all, damsels in distress, villains, heroes, romance, suspense, and, mistakes & misunderstandings all wrapped up in one cannot-put-it-down story. I was lucky enough to receive a gift copy.. and I am very happy to state I really liked this story. I think you will agree.

“Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes” by Emily Larkin
A truly fun read from start to finish. There is so much more I would like to say… but I fear I would just give too much of the story away and you deserve to discover the ‘catastrophes’ for the first time within the pages of this story. A story well worth the read, if you enjoy smiling and laughing.

NOTE: This review expresses is my honest opinion.

Two in one

Military officers and independent caring ladies, a combination that's bound to result in surprises. Lady Isabella makes a slip up at a ball resulting in her striving to correct her error setting up a flirtation with Major Reynolds who is seeking a young lady he can mold into his ideal wife. Wilhelmina meets Lieutenant Mayhew on a stage coach as he travels to deliver kittens to his niece and nephew resulting in one mishap after another. Both of these are wonderful stories with humor and romance throughout and results neither couple were expecting when first they met. I highly recommend reading this book.

Lady Isabella’s Ogre-A thoroughly enjoyable read. The characters are full of depth and it is so easy to see how they fall in love. The obstacles are real but not overwhelming. A fun romance!

Lt. Mayhew’s Catastrophe is about a secondary character in Emily Larkin’s series. The novella is so delightful! I truly smiled all through it and it made me feel so happy! It’s a book that will truly lift your spirits.

Lady Isabella's Ogre *****

I enjoyed reading this novel very much. The characters are charming and the plot premise - young girl forced by a guardian to marry a titled gentleman - a common incident in that time.

Emily Larkin is well versed in custom and behaviour of Regency, the descriptions of all those social events are very entertaining and I could see it like "head cinema".

Most of all I liked Isabella and Nicholas, the ogre. Both are very sympathetic characters, their love developped slowly and their banter was witty. Emily Larkin writes very good dialogues, her characters communicate instead of having long internal monologues.
Inserting all those stray cats, dogs, and a damsel in distress was a masterstroke.

Lieutenant Mayhew's Catastrophes ***

This novella was filled with one mishap after the next, all very funny especially with the cats.
Interesting story set in Regency but as a road trip not in the ballroom.

I previously read these two stories separately. I read ARCS of them, but voluntarily and honestly reviewed them

You can't go wrong with any of Larkin's writing, in my opinion. As most good books, even if they aren't novellas, you may feel like you want even more. Yet the story and characters are fleshed out and the action is well-paced. And the story features cats prominently, so what's not to love?

Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes by Emily Larkin is sweet and feels true to the time period. The catastrophes of the title are the only real conflict in the story, with the romance developing quickly but surely. It was also fun to have main characters that are atypical for the genre.

Lady Isabella's Ogre, like all of Emily Larkin’s books, is a beautiful love story. The characters get to know each other slowly and their relationship progresses in a very natural, believable manner. There is a Grand Deception, which is a trope I normally am not fond of, but it is resolved well and without excessive, childish drama. As with many other of Larkin’s books, the couple are mature adults and not overgrown adolescents and I appreciate that immensely. I highly recommend this book.

Two previously published delightful stories combined in this duo. I read and much enjoyed both stories individually a few years ago.
Lady Isabella is 29 and while she enjoys the social outings of the Season, she's not looking for a husband. She's has a strong sense of decency and fairness. She's mortified when a notorious gossip hears her label Major Reynolds an ogre and sets out to correct her error. This allows the h and H to become better acquainted and makes for a more believable ending. I loved the main characters - both mature and self-assured. No thoughts of doubt ad nauseum here. The humor is subtle - mostly scenes involving animals and small children - which had me grinning.

Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophes describes a road trip in which numerous things go wrong, but mastered by our undaunted H and h, Lt. Mayhew and Miss Culpepper. The trials help prove to these two strangers the other's strength of character - and how suited they are to each other. Overall light-hearted, yet with some sobering reminiscing by both characters.

Lady Isabella’s ogre is one of my go-to book. I bough it with the previous publisher so I've read it a number of times over the years.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Lady Isabella is one of my favourite regency characters, she is strong and competent and has a soft spot for strays. The story never fails to bring me to tears (for chapter 22 and onwards I recommend having tissues handy).
Sex scenes: one but it fits in the story and in not too long or detailed.

Lieutenant Mayhew’s Catastrophe
Such a sweet and joyous tale of tribulations that really was an adventure. It was made even better with the kittens personalities and cuteness sprinkled in. I also liked that it has strong female main character.
Well worth a read and it’ll leave you smiling and with a light heart.
Sex scenes: one. Short but just right to fit the story.
I have in the past received both books seperatly free for an honest review.
