Color Blind

Rate this book
Setting out on your own is tough, but for Mason Fullerton, who was born blind, it’s even more of a challenge. Mase decides that the key to independence and a life of his own is getting a job. His mother, who has always been there for support, isn’t so sure, but Mase is determined. He manages to secure an interview, and one of the men conducting it has a voice that wraps around him like a blanket.

Tyrone Phillips feels he’s a disappointment to his accomplished academic parents. They don’t understand that Ty would rather spend time with his computers and programs than people. Until he meets Mason at an interview and finds a kindred spirit. Too bad his parents aren’t going to see past the fact that Mason’s white.

When Mason is hired, Ty is assigned to help him get oriented. The two of them dance around each other, but mutual attraction tugs at both of them. A work friendship builds to more, with Ty and Mase trying to find their way… and if they have courage and allow their hearts to guide them, they could be going the same direction.

I wanted to love this so bad!

This title needs a rework, Mase was born blind there is no color for him to see. I was so confused as to how he was blind and colorblind but I think unfortunately it’s supposed to imply that he doesn’t see race because he’s blind? Blind people can be racist. Mase is rare with his lack of any vision but that doesn’t mean he isn’t raised in a racist society.

This book is really trying to draw hard similarities between being black and disabled that's not how this works; those are two different things. Ty says that since he’s black the first thing people think is that he “will pull out a knife” and Mace says “people laugh when I fall down we're both judged by our appearances” that's not the same, thing is this is so cringe really Mase.

I did really like how they talked about Mase finding his way around and moving through life as a blind man. That is until the plot had his mother gaslight him, like the actual form of it, moving the furniture around so Mase trips and then puts the furniture back (and moves the stickers???) then she acts like Mase is getting confused and if he doesn’t keep living with her or if Mase doesn’t work from home he’ll die. Your son doesn’t need agency. Dude after a certain amount of times don’t answer the phone when your mom calls, like when you're in the middle of sex. You’re mom can go find a life.

Both of their moms suffered from a tragic case “unreasonable for plot” but especially Mase's mom. And even with abusive language and behavior they say that she still loves her son and wants what's best for him but best for him would be not to gaslight him

Biracial mm romance... (he was born blind, and he's not "color blind" unless you mean that he is not worried about dating a black man.)
Ty helps Mase get adjusted to his new workplace. They like each other right away.

Mase, born blind, has a devoted Mom, he's gotten his Bachelor degree and a new job at Marsten Electronics. Mom doesn't want him in a work dating predicament.

Tyrone/Ty, a black man with strict parents who want different things for him. He's a smart and friendly man, helps Mase get settled, and wants to date him.

We get to see the friendship and relationship grow, very sweet, romantic and understanding. Ty is unfazed by Mase's disability and wants more. Mase is interested, too, but wants to move slower, because he must adjust to navigate new surroundings.

Both guys are terrific for each other, and have each other's back several times. It's a slow burn, first times that are non-explicit.
A lovely blend of two deserving souls.
ENJOY !

Not up to par with his other works

I normally like this author's work but this book.......nope. Black people do not reference their hair as kinky in general conversation. Also this book was hyper focused on Mase dropping food or making a mess. I didn't feel a connection with these two and no grounds for romance. I would have liked to see Mase enter a program to teach him how to live on his own instead of going from one codependent relationship to another. This book left me feeling like....... hmmmmm.......that's ashame this could have been something.

I’m rounding this one up to 4 stars because I really liked Mase and Ty and the relationship they built but I did feel like the story didn’t deliver as strong and I think it came down to the parent relationships.

Mase is blind, has been his entire life, and he’s come to a point where he wants to find some independence. He’s up for a new job that he is really excited about, he knows he can do the work and it will give him that push he needs to step out into the world. His mom, who’s been his support all of his life, is less than excited and worried that something could happen to Mase. During his interview he meets Ty who is kind and thoughtful to Mase right from the start and the two strike up an easy friendship. He seems to understand the help Mase may need and steps right up. It’s a genuine connection right from the start. But Ty faces his own challenges, he too still lives at home with very protective parents who see a different future for him, one that doesn’t include dating a white man. Ty comes from a very proud black family and that is an important part of who they are.

What I liked about this book – the relationship and feelings that develop between Mase and Ty. They are so sweet together and it just feels like a natural connection. Ty works hard to understand the challenges Mase faces and wants to assist him not coddle him. Mase too seems to pick up on Ty’s struggles and wants to understand and support him. I really enjoyed how these two stand up for each other and support each other, it made it easy to root for them and their love. I did struggle with the parent relationships, boundaries and how it came together. In the end, I was happy with how things worked out but it took me a bit to get there.

In honor of Black History month "All people are Black to me"

When I read the title I thought it was just a play on words for a story about a blind young man seeking his independence. It never occurred to me that this would be an interracial MM romance. Two college educated young men end up at the same job. Yet they couldn't be more different. One is black and one is white. One was raised by a single parent while the other had two parents with PhDs. The parents wanted what they believed was best for their sons.
The sons that never expected a work friendship would lead to more. Two men who fascinated each other. They wondered what attracted the other to him. It was fascinating to observe how family dynamics shaped these young men and what led to their "rebellions". Learning how difficult it was for the blind man to navigate life and to see him keep reaching for more was very rewarding. I loved how both men fought for what they wanted and deserved. And how they supported each other with and without their parents' assistance or approval.
I truly enjoyed this book by Andrew Grey. He is really good at showcasing the Ability that a disabled person has but also the realism of what in this case being blind actually means.

Tammy gives this one 4.5 Stars...

Mason is a bright if sheltered young man, much to his dismay. Born blind, he's lived on his own before, but had to move back home with his mom who redifines the term 'helicoptermom'. Ty also lives with his folks but for different reasons and could easily leave, but enjoys most of the benefits of living at home. While these are two decidedly different guys, they have so much in common and once thrust into one another's orbits, a fast friendship blooms into so much more.

This is a short, sexy read with a lot of content for so few pages. Mason was my favorite character by far, though I loved the relationship that grew between him and Ty, his personality simply jumped off the pages for me. His mother though, that woman was just too much, and the reason I docked the story half a star. I wanted a resolution to some of her actions within the story that just kind of fell off and that bothered me. To say anymore would be a spoiler, you'll just have to read for yourself.

This book isa 5/5 for me. Mason was born blind but he went to college and obtained a degree working with computers. His mother is not ready for him to leave home but Mason is ready. Tyrone is a programmer who feels he has disappointed both of the college professor parents. The know that he is gay but they would not mind if he would find some nice black man to date and continue his education. Mason and Tyrone meet at the job. Tyrone helps interview Mason and the two men become fast friends. Mason’s mother has to get used to him having a boyfriend and Tyrone’s parents get used to Mason being white. Of course Mason’s mother needs to work just a little more

nice and sweet

This was a sweet romance. Very unique in that I’d not read one in which one of the characters was blind. Mason and Ty fell in love rather quickly but that’s okay. I was half-expecting to discover Mason’s mother had moved their furniture just enough to trip Mason up, thus “proving” that he couldn’t be on his own. Glad that wasn’t the case.

The biggest issue I had with the story was the constant name usage. I counted the same name used 6 times in a single paragraph. It got old really quickly. I feel there could have been a better way to write some of those sentences.

4 1/2 stars. This story was interesting, and I enjoyed Mase and Tyrone. Tyrone was so good about helping Mase figure out his surroundings without treating him that differently. Mase was brave to try and strike out on his own, to be independent. Their chemistry was hot. Their story really did touch my heart.

I received an ARC through Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team, and this is my unsolicited review.

3 stars. It was a different read with a blind man as well as interracial, and i would have given it four stars but the issue with the over protective mother never got explained and it finished too quickly. I was thinking it was building towards a Munchausen by proxy/gaslighting due to the changed placement of furniture etc, but it didn’t develop and that plot line was left hanging.
As usual though, easy and comforting read by Andrew Grey so a favourite author.

meh this time

Just didn’t do it for me this time. Usually love Grey’s books but just meh this time. Well written as usual but how sheltered and overly protected he was despite having gone to a public high school. The idea that he could not be independent without a dog didn’t sit right and the Mom - Wow 😯

An inspiring story.

A blind person has a lot to overcome in their life. It didn't dawn on me about a relationship between a sighted and a blind person. They would have roadblocks to overcome as well as, becoming a part of society .
