Teaching is hard and creating a thriving classroom environment is even harder. If I Were the Teacher is a read-aloud that helps teachers build a safe and loving community of trust and wonder.
Children love to imagine, and that’s exactly what Max does on the first day of school. He dreams about what he would do if he were the teacher. His ideas are wild, chaotic, and downright hilarious. But in the end, Max realizes that it’s probably good he’s not in charge. He is very thankful for his teacher and decides that if she’s his teacher then he doesn’t want to change a thing.
If I Were the Teacher uses inclusive and humorous illustrations to pull students into the story. This book will promote valuable conversations of imagination and curiosity while deepening the bond of the teacher-student relationship. If I Were the Teacher is a perfect addition for any elementary school teacher’s library.

As a language teacher, I love this book for so many reasons! I appreciate a resource that can be adapted for multiple levels of instruction. Also, this book has a positive message for students about the joy of learning while simultaneously encouraging their imagination and creativity. Additionally, the story is written in comprehensible language and will be a valuable resource for a variety of classrooms. It is apparent that as a teacher himself, Tiersma gets into the mind of the student who is embarking on a new school year with the excitement, apprehension, and anticipation that accompanies that experience. Van Der Pol captures the essence of the back-to-school experience and vivid imagination of children in his unique illustration style. "If I Were the Teacher" is a wonderful addition to any classroom or home library!
Intended Audience: This book is for children who are in either preschool or early elementary school. Key Themes & Topics: This book as a playful storyline where the teacher resonates with young readers who may be curious about the roles and responsibilities of the teacher. This book is designed to entertain and inspire young children to be creative and use their imagination to think about the future. Why This Book: I chose this book because this book reminds me of when I was younger. I was the student who was also volunteering to help grade papers, make copies, etc. Now I am going to school to be a teacher and have those responsibilities that I used to help with when I was younger. I think we need more educators in the world, and this book can spark interest in students who may want to pursue education as well.
I thought I’d really like this book. It’s was marketed as really funny and gave the message to be nice to your teacher. Although some part it might be funny to children, I was not very impressed with the jokes or the illustrations. The message to be nice to your teacher I feel had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story.
Delightful reflections of a child beginning a new school experience! 'What ifs' and "what would the results be' are explored through words and illustrations in a lovely interplay. A great tool for both eliciting both writing and art projects!
