When Nurse practitioner Layla Matthews awakens in her own coffin, she begins a journey that takes her to “The Body Auction,” where she uncovers a devious and meticulously orchestrated underground nightmare. Though the business of human trafficking has been all over the news, it has long remained a problem for “other people,” until Layla finds herself face-to-face with the realities of a depraved, multi-million-dollar-industry, and soon learns that the darkest depths of evil is much, much closer to home than she ever thought possible.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The author was so nice and even signed it for me, so thank you Lisa Mathis! If this review seems a little long it’s because I think the author deserves a well thought out and sincere review.
Imagine waking up, groggy and confused, not knowing where you are or how you got there. You can’t move, you can’t even open your eyes. And then slowly realizing you are in fact in a coffin and in the middle of your own funeral. That’s the predicament Layla Matthews finds herself in. I feel like I can’t say too much more about the plot because I don’t want to give too much away.
The story overall was 5/5. The premise sucks you in from the very first chapter. How did Layla get into this situation? Will she get out? Who did this to her? So many questions need to be answered. And answers, we get. Whew, this book was a roller coaster. There were so many times I thought “well that’s that, the story is wrapped up,” only for there to be hundreds of pages left. This book is action packed and the twists keep coming.
Since this is an honest review, I feel like I should also say the things that slightly took away from the story (for me). Sometimes the way the characters talked seemed robotic due to contractions not being used enough. Most people don’t say “so I do not need a fake ID,” or “I am sorry.” They say “so I don’t need a fake ID,” or “I’m sorry.” I also felt like exclamation points were a bit overused. Either that, or every character is very excited at all times. This might seem nitpicky, but both of these things felt distracting to me and changed the way I perceived the characters. But, this is a new author and these things can be easily smoothed over for more books to come if she wishes.
One thing she absolutely nails is the medical side of this novel. Working in the medical field myself, there’s nothing I hate more than a medical thriller that’s inaccurate, and I couldn’t find a single inaccuracy in this one. I found one part quite humorous when we are introduced to a new, younger physician that is cocky, rude, and condescending. Layla says “he had MD by his name, and in his tiny brain, that made him a god.” And oh man, I could just instantly picture a few physicians at my own hospital that fit that characterization perfectly. That told me right away she knows what she’s talking about.
Overall I did like this book, and I think the ending was also set up in a way to perfectly shift to a sequel.
3.5 stars rounded down for too many god and going to heaven references for me to not roll my eyes a bit.
Wow wow wow!! This book was INTENSE!!! From the first page, you’re on the edge of your seat. If you’re looking for a thriller that doesn’t let up, this is the one for you! I’m ready for the sequel already!!
I did not like the writing style of this book at all. It was entirely written in first person and straight forward storytelling like reading a journal. I was so bored with it before the first 100 pages that I just skipped and skimmed through most of the book because I was still interested enough to want to know the actual events and ending.
Holy cow was this book AMAZING!! I was given this book in exchange for an honest review and all I can say is, if you haven't gotten this book yet..RUN and get it now! It is one of the most well written and suspenseful books that I have read in a long time. It was full of twists and turns and had my heart thumping and so anxious. Just when I thought I had it figured out I was surprised that I was totally wrong.
The author hooks you from the very beginning and I was unable to put it down. I was only going to read a couple chapters a day but ended up hooked and read page after page until the wee hours of the morning. I'm usually hesitate to even read anything that has to do with the medical field because let's face it, most of the time the information that ends up in the book is very inaccurate and it makes the story boring and no fun for the reader. Lisa is very well educated and knowledgeable in the medical field and she sure was able to bring the story together and bring accurate facts of the medical field to the reading world. Well done. I will be thrilled to read another one of your stories in the future.

Let me start off by saying the Author of this book is a pure angel she sent me this copy of this book free of charge, paid shipping, and even signed it for me. I read this whole book in less than 24 hours I was enveloped in this book and couldn’t put it down. Just when you think it can’t get more suspenseful bam it hits you again. Every page was enticing and boy does it not disappoint. The accuracy of the medical terminology in this book is astonishing. There were so many twists and turns it was unbelievable. If you haven’t read The Body Auction by Lisa Mathis you are missing out! Amazing, gut wrenching, heart breaking, suspenseful, and many more terms I could use! I have left a review for this book on EVERY platform I could think of. She deserves so much recognition for this book and more! So please read this book and lets help support a new author!
Wow! I bought this book and thought that I would read just a little before going to bed. I was sucked in from the first page. After several "Just one more chapters" later, it was 1:00 in the morning. This book was intense and kept my full attention until the end.
Lisa Mathis has a gift of pulling the reader into the story. She is so descriptive that I could almost smell the flowers in the funeral home. I could feel my pulse racing during several parts of this book.
I loved the ending. I felt the story was complete but also gave a little something extra to flow into the, hopefully, next book.
The Body Auction is a solid 5 Star read for me. Actually 5+ if that was an option.
This was amazing! The way that Lisa Mathis writes is fantastic. She weaves her medical training into the story while making the characters feel relatable. She balanced all the elements of the story so that it all fits together. Reading her book reminds me of reading Robin Cook books…after you are done you can’t help but think that this really could happen…I hope this one’s story line is not. Excellent book…I hope that she makes it a series. ❤️📚
Wow! This book was crazy right from the beginning! It grabs you and straps you in (no pun intended 😋) From the prologue Lisa Mathis makes you want more. The plot twists and turns keep you on your toes making it impossible to put down! Just when you think you have it figured out she adds a new twist! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. This book is full of action. I can’t wait for the next one! I have found another favorite author! 🥰
Eh. I didn’t love this book. The story had great promise but fell flat. I wanted more gorey detail and terrifying scenes. The writing felt like bad movie acting if that makes sense? Also too many exclamation points not in the right spot. It had one after every single “I love you!” And I found that annoying. The daughter’s character also felt way too childish to be what she was supposed to be. Overall this book was a let down to me.
Wow!! I do not know how to describe the intensity in this book. It was excellent. Can you imagine waking up and can't move because you realize you are buried in a coffin? This is just the beginning. A terrifying, heart-pounding, and incredible plot. The authors writing style gives you anxiety to see what is next. The author portrayed the medical industry as perfect. I loved everything about this book. Run out and read today.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Suspense to the fullest!! Layla Matthews a Nurse Practitioner gets pulled into a human trafficking ring and finds herself a victim several times throughout this thrill ride of a book!! During her ordeal she finds she has a desire to help women who have fallen victim to human trafficking! Can’t wait to read Book 2-The Body Auction: Redemption
This book is what sparked my love of reading suspense thrillers!!! I was hooked from the prologue and read it within 24hrs. I have never read a book that fast in my life! The storyline is crazy good and you will be on the edge of your seat the entire book. I could feel my chest heavy with anxiety waiting on what was going to happen next!! Fantastic book!
What would you do if you woke up unable to move, see or speak and realized you were in a coffin at your own funeral? Just to find out later that it was all part of an elaborate human trafficking scheme and you were stuck in the middle of it. Find out what Layla does in the epic thriller!!
Amazing!!! Loved this book, had me hooked from page one!! I’m just starting to get into this thriller type genera and definitely the first medial read! Very well done Lisa!! I’m excited to see what you come up with next!!
You have to read this book… it starts and doesn’t stop until the end. Your worst nightmare.. waking up in your coffin. This happens to an NP.. and my oh my.. get ready! Human trafficking is real and this book addresses the issue - head on. I seriously could not put it down.
There were still a lot of grammatical errors in the book (one on the back cover).
Story seemed to take a little bit to progress. But it was a book I wanted to know the ending of. Wasn’t one that kept me up at night needing more, which is what I was thinking it would be like.
This book is well written, a quick read, and takes you through so many emotions! Lisa writes as if you’re there in real time…the detail is accurate and helps you really grasp the situation “you’re in.” The only negative I have is that I should’ve read it sooner!
The story was good, but the audiobook narration nearly ruined it for me. Aside from the poor narration, the audio editing was terrible. I spent a good part of the book trying to decide if it was the writing that wasn't good or the narration. Narration won.
This book sucks you in from the very beginning. the beginning of the book is gripping, suspense, and emotional. i felt like the first half of the book was so good but then it lost me about half way through, the ending is set up perfectly for book two.
If you aren’t a fan of human trafficking type books, avoid this one!! It’s definitely a page turner and you want to know what happens and who’s involved! That kept me hooked despite hating reading about human trafficking and organ removal, etc.

This was just so action packed I literally couldn’t put it down! It gave some serious TAKEN vibes! The ending was rough but all in all it was a fantastic/easy read!
