I actually took a 休憩 midway for awhile because it was so frustrating seeing how Kyle did not grow at all and remained a terrible brat. That, until he met Claudia and started living with her at the brothel where she was working as a prostitute. His everyday interaction with the prostitutes and other townspeople, albeit not without tension, gradually transformed him into a less self-centered individual with a more compassionate understanding of the travails of the common folks. I personally like the part about his life with Claudia the best. She kind of reminds me of the kind prostitute Liza from Dostoevski’s “Notes from Underground”. She loved and accepted Kyle for who he was, while also helped him become a better person. That’s the ultimate love isn’t it?
I personally am not really convinced that Kyle’s love for Warren was solidly nurtured, deep down it feels wobbly to me. But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, if not to say, rather a realistic portrayal of a relationship. The romance with Warren serves more like a catalyst for Kyle’s character development, and again as a sort of milestone within Kyle’s journey of life. And that is good enough.
