Slow Learners in the English Classroom

Rate this book
A classroom is a complex world that contains a relatively heterogeneous group of students. Despite their innate skills and abilities, some students get unrecognized or neglected due to teachers' failure in making proper assessments. As a result, many students who could be potential scientists or experts in any other field become dropouts or underachievers. When classroom instructors only rely on test results without being very keen on using their observational skills to assess their students comprehensively, they jeopardize the future of so many children during their careers. Hence, it would be apt to say that a child's future partially lies in the hands of their early educators.

I won't be the first one to say that this book is a must-read for all language teachers. Gripping!

I recently picked up this book and was very impressed! Indeed, a very insightful read for ESL teachers. Highly recommended.
One of the very first quotes I stumbled upon is, “One of the best strategies for uplifting slow learners in the inclusive classroom is to train them to become independent learners because a non-segregated classroom will better prepare them for higher education.” And I knew then, that I am going to learn a lot from this book.

My general intake from parts 1 through 3:

1. A student becomes a slow learner due to general socio-cultural problems, inadequate use of strategies, or lack of interest.
2. The common problem for slow learners is in reading. In this case, a teacher should break down the material or task into smaller absorbable units.
3. Collaborative tasks are extremely important. In education, the social life of the classroom is viewed as an essential aspect of learning.
4. To identify slow learners, it is recommended to conduct evaluative tests that include higher-order questions and critical thinking skills. Moreover, analyzing the social history of the family and cultural setting will help understand the root of the issue.
5. Slow learners do not usually have any specific strategies for learning, but they must learn how to do for themselves what teachers typically do for them in the classroom.

Overall, here’s how to deal with slow learners in an ESL classroom:

1. Celebrate small successes to gain confidence
2. Frequent feedback and instructions
3. Encourage them to find motivation
4. Meet with them to discuss their experience and needs
5. Pair them with strong learners (collaborative learning)
6. Investigate other learning techniques
7. Provide them with tools
8. Go the extra mile (adequate support – extra tutoring hours- rapport…etc)
9. Change perspectives (from a tutor to a facilitator)

Dr. Binu delivers this academic piece brilliantly. Looking forward to his future work.
