A bold American beauty learns to play the marriage game by the notorious rules of her noble mate.
THE BATTLE OF THE BELLES
In America, Miss Sarah Goldsborough was a dazzling Southern belle -- dazzling enough to win the heart of handsome British officer Peter Marchman. Peter was not like any other man she had ever known -- but only when she came as his bride to his home in England did she learn just how different he was.
Peter was Lord Marchman here -- and she was his lady. But in an aristocratic world where titles were trumps in games of love, and marriage vows seemed made only to be broken, Sarah discovered that she needed more than the beauty that had won him to keep him. And so Sarah was forced to match her wits and wiles against the seductions and stratagems of Peter's stunning cousin Annabella, society's reigning belle who had claimed Peter once and now meant to possess her lordly lover again....
There was nothing very special about this book, as in not much happened in it, it wasn't a very passionate or exciting book at all but for some reason I still quite enjoyed it. I found the writing lovely, the play on words and descriptions the author used were nice and the hero and heroine were cute, that's the best way to describe them, very cute, I love my regency's being PG in general that's why I love regencys as most of them are, but I feel this one was G rated even lol it was maybe a bit too clean as they didn't even really have a proper kiss scene, there was one kiss at the start and one at the end and they were only one sentence telling us they kissed so there was no description of passion, so the story was maybe a bit too clean, I feel like most do like the passionate descriptions of the kisses between the couple but it isn't always necessary I suppose. I love Lady Aureila in it, the hero's relative, I love the wise old ladies in regencys, and Lady Aureila delivered well in that role. The hero and heroine were nice too, I liked them both, I do like how the heroine never let his bitter relatives get the better of her, she would never give them the satisfaction of knowing how much they did affect her, halfway through the book the hero and heroine have a big fight (a silly argument but an argument nonetheless) and while at the time of the argument I was on the heroines side, what become after in the following days I think she took way too far and the hero did not deserve that so I am more on his side later on but it was nothing major and of course all is okay in the end, like I said this was nothing special, not much happened in it, it's just about 2 people who unexpectantly meet and fall in love during his time in America and they marry and return to England and the book is basically about her adjusting to life in England and their marriage on English soil, nothing amazing by any means but I enjoyed it. How they met is something to tell their grandchildren about though, how he broke into her house to steal food and was shoving food in his mouth and his pocket when she saw him and she cracked a vase over his head lol.
