Star Wars: Yoda (2022-2023) #1

Rate this book
To some, he was a legend. To others, he was a teacher. Now Yoda is all but forgotten, living in exile and haunted by the past. As a strangely familiar voice echoes through the swamps of Dagobah, Yoda must revisit the many lessons he has given over the years, from the days of the High Republic to the chaos of the Clone Wars. In the first of three story arcs, a desperate cry for help reaches the Jedi Council on Coruscant and only Yoda can respond. But how far will he go to protect a community from attack?

Finished reading Yoda (2022) #1, and I thought it was pretty decent. Nothing amazing, but not bad either. The art was pretty cool, and I always like to see Yoda in action. The point in the timeline is pretty interesting to me. Some point in between the end of the High Republic and before The Phantom Menace I'd assume. I say this cause of the premise this comic sets up for later issues. I do hope there is something interesting from here as Yoda implies he's going to this planet cause the force calls for it. So hopefully there is a greater lesson for Yoda.
If you aren't a Star Wars fan this might not do much for you, but if you really like exploring the lore then this might be worth the shot if you want another Yoda story.

"It was okay." - 2.5 star rating, with a round down to a 3.

It pains me to give Grand Master Yoda a 2-star rating for this comic, but there is a critical flaw with this comic's delivery that by the Force, I cannot ignore.

While the dialog is good and the artwork is great... the major problem here is the backbone of the story itself.

There's a cry for help on a distant world, as two alien factions undergo calamity. The Jedi Counsel receives the call... and this is where everything falls apart. While the Masters discuss how to proceed... Yoda steps up and says 'hold my cane' and that he is going to go solo the planetary conflict all by himself.

This is just beyond ridiculous and so out of character for Yoda. Imagine a General Officer in the Army... picking up his rifle and jumping in a truck and solo'ing a mission by himself... out numbered beyond belief... it's just so dumb and immersion breaking.

I totally understand Yoda is a Grand Master and ya ya ya.... but come on. As he cleaves down alien raider after raider, basically a small army, all by himself... it's just awful and makes no sense. Now, if this was angsty Anakin right before he converted full send to the Dark Side - now that would entirely make sense and fit the lore. No way does this align with Yoda at all.

This series is ten (10) issues in total I believe... and I sincerely hope it gets better story wise.

Definitely off to a bad start in that department. At least the artwork is beautiful... I guess I can attempt to just treat this as 'popcorn' reading if it continues to fall short on the depth side of the house.

We shall see.

“This is why we serve. Serve the light. Serve life. Always life.”

Issue 1 of Star Wars: Yoda begins an adventure where we follow Yoda during the High Republic era as he answers a distress call of a small community under attack.

So, before I go into the issue and all that, I must preface this by saying that I am and never have been the biggest Yoda fan. I think he is an iconic, brilliant character, but I've just never personally felt super connected to him. My 3/5 rating is based on mostly me just never really being too hyped about Yoda-centric stories and inability to get super invested if it's just him. I mostly enjoy Yoda in relation to other characters.

Now, this issue itself is well written and exciting, and I think it emphasises some very cool and interesting aspects of Yoda at this time period: he is a warrior, yes, and a scarily competent one at that, but he is, above all, a protector and a servant of the light. I liked the art a lot and I just overall thought it was a cool issue. Objectively it would probably be more like 4/5 stars, but as I already said, even though I recognised it was a well-done first issue and treated Yoda well as a character, I just couldn't connect with it more than 3/5 worth due to my disinterest in Yoda.

I'm not certain if I will continue on with this series. There are some things I do want to know the answers to - like who is Yoda talking to - but since this first issue left me kind of lukewarm, as I suspected it would, I think I'll wait and see if I end up feeling any desire to pick issue 2 up.

Very good.

I really liked this series debut. Very little is known about Yoda's adventures before the franchise officially started, so this is a real treat for Star Wars fans. Five *****'s!

I was curious to pick this one up and after a good start it really goes downward fast. Not that it was all bad, but just too easy, teeny and similar to too many Star Wars comic. I won’t continue.

Really enjoyed this one. It seems like it explores two really interesting eras of Yoda’s life, so I’m excited to see where it goes. I’m instantly hooked.

Yoda In Action!!!

This is great. Seeing Yoda before the fall of the Jedi and how he became who he is. Can't wait for more in this series.

Yoda might be one of the most versatile characters that Star Wars has. With the exception of everything post The Empire Strikes Back he can be used in pretty much every other setting there is. Want prequel stuff? Easy. Reign of the empire? Can do. High Republic? Absolutely. His long life means he can pop up in most places and you don't really think much about out. And it seems like Cavan Scott is going to be making the most of that versatility in the new comic series focused on the tiny Jedi Grand Master.

The new ten part series begins with an elderly Yoda on Dagobah, where familiar voice calls out to him from through the Force. It's not revealed here whose voice it is, though it is one that Yoda is familiar with. The most obvious candidate would e that it's Obi-Wan, and that this is set soon after Ob-Wan's death; but there are several other possibilities as to who might be speaking to him, and the issue plays that pretty close to its chest.

The bulk of the issue seems to be set during the High Republic times, if the clothing on the Jedi Council we see is anything to go by. On the peaceful planet of Turrak, on the outer rim, a coastal village comes under attack from pirates. One of the village children manages to get to an old ship, and uses the communications systems to send out a message for help; one that finds its way to Coruscant and the Jedi Temple.

Whilst the members of the Council argue that there's not much that can be done, and that these people are pretty much on their own, Yoda informs them that he will be travelling there himself. Arriving on Turrak in the nick of time, he manages to repel the pirates, and decides to stay on the planet to make sure that the people are safe.

This issue is a really fun showcase for those who like seeing Yoda in action (who doesn't though right?) as he arrives on Turrak in the middle of the raid, and cleans the clock of several pirates, with his saber in one hand and a massive axe three times his size in the other. It's super cool to see him doing the stuff he does here, and the art team of Nico Leon and Dono Sáchez-Almara do an amazing job at making things look dynamic, action packed, and cool.

The quieter moments in the issue are also done really well, and Turrak before the pirates arrive looks like a lovely place to be. The aliens that call it home seem like really nice people, and I absolutely loved the designs for them, and am glad that it seems like we're getting more than one issue of them so that I can see more of them.

Overall, this was a really good start to the series, it's showing us something new with Yoda straight away, and the team here seem more than capable of giving us the Yoda we know, as well as delivering new and interesting things too.
