Good with hows, less good with whys

What I liked about this book was the clear instructions and excellent pictures that wallked me through the process of coding.

What I felt was missing was any discussion of big picture issues--what kind of game might a person like to make? How can you take a concept in your head and turn it into (virtual) reality?

The first half of the book talked about languages, platforms, and processes, giving good explanations about the strengths and weaknesses of each, and including examples of groups that use them in the gaming world.

It didn't do a particularly good job of connecting any of these things to a project that the reader might be interested in making, or explaining why someone might want to take a particular action.

The discussion of object-oriented programming was hard to understand, even though I already have some idea of what it is.

When we finally did get to making a tiny game, there was no discussion of what the game would do or be for, it was just "do this...do that...look, now you have a character in a forest."

As someone who plays almost entirely puzzle games (and a few sandbox ones), I have very little interest in putting a character in a forest, and I don't see a connection between doing so and setting up something I'd actually want to make.

So, I'd recommend this book for people who are already fairly interested in coding, have some experience with it, and who want to create first person shooter games.

C+, C++, Java and so much more

Written by a game developer and designer there are a lot of assumptions being made. This book says it’s for beginners but it really isn’t. That is the hard part of the book on gaming. There is a need to be familiar with the programming language referred to throughout the book. If you know the programming language and coding languages then this seems like a good entry book. Sadly, I didn’t. So, had to believe that the author knew what he was talking about. This isn’t a plug and play kind of read. It offers valuable information about coding but this is not going to be the book that at the end you have a fully functional game. Take that with a pinch of salt. Truly interesting read but filled with caveats.

Good starting point for game development for youngsters

I thought the ebook version of this book to see how it fits the needs of starting programming in gaming for my young nephew before I can buy him a paperback version. I think the books very nicely introduces all the concepts and the approach to game development. The second half of the book could be further improved by making it a bit simpler. Buy overall, a good book for youngsters who are lookinh for a future career development in programming and gaming.

Good thing for beginners. I feel that functions in first chapters would be easier to get with practical example vs just theory, but overall still clear enough
