The Questions of Jesus

Rate this book
Questions have a surprisingly big place in the Gospels. Jesus often asked them to engage His listeners or to challenge their thinking. Various people asked Him questions. His followers often wanted to understand Him but sometimes to use Him; His opponents sharpened them as weapons against Him. A few of Jesus’ questions seem stupid, even rude—they’re not! As always with Jesus, there’s more to everything He said than at first appears. The interactions have lasting value too—for us. What lies behind the questions we sometimes ask God? What do His questions teach us about ourselves?

This collection of 52 short pieces takes a variety of approaches to explore the most interesting questions in people’s interactions with Jesus. But they also examine us and encourage us to think and live more like Jesus.

This is a very deep, insightful, and thought-provoking nonfiction devotional consisting of 50+ short chapters. Each chapter starts with a Bible verse (and any parallel verses) from the Gospels to reference to as you read the book, and discusses the questions Jesus asked and the questions asked of him.

The chapters cover many deep topics that Christians should ponder and take to heart. An example of this is the chapter "The Goldilocks Zone", which is about lukewarm Christians who are afraid to go to any extremes in their faith, and therefor remain wishy-washy about important issues instead of taking a stand. Not too hot, not too cold. This is not what God wants. Jesus came to send fire on the earth (Luke 12:49).

Even though the book is short and the chapters easily read, this is not a light, fluffy, feel-good read. It makes you think. The book is not intended to be browsed or skimmed through, but studied in conjunction with the Word of God for a more deep and fulfilling relationship with Jesus Christ.

Because of the book's depth, this is without a doubt the best Christian nonfiction work I've read since J.C. Ryle's Holiness and Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ, my two favorites up until this point. I highly recommend it, and consider myself blessed by having been able to read it. Five stars.

In these days of gross biblical illiteracy, many own a Bible but never read it. Some read it but don’t understand it or are not changed by its message.

John Avery’s The Questions of Jesus is food for this biblical famine. It provides bite-sized, easy-to-digest chapters covering various passages of Scripture in which questions were asked by Jesus and by others. John covers familiar stories about Jesus we’ve read in the Gospels, and he answers our questions of “Why did Jesus say that? How does this apply to me?” I particularly liked the chapter on worry, my weakness.

John gives just enough scholarship to add depth to the accounts and sense to the applications. The Questions of Jesus offers options of reading straight through or jumping around for an appropriate topic (my choice). It’s good for those who may not have large chunks of time to spend in the Word but need something of Scripture in their day.

Thought-provoking. Action-packed. Resurrection-focused. John Avery’s The Questions of Jesus helped me explore how to delve into a deeper relationship with Christ and listen to him and people more attentively. The query-nuggets that John shares reveal authoritative—and profound—roles that Christ played in impacting people in their culture. I learned that about 75% of Jesus’ 165 questions aimed to challenge or change people’s thinking about God and his kingdom. The short, informative chapters excellently highlight how those shifts take place.
