Beautiful in substance and appearance. It has been my daily devotion for the last year. I've appreciated the selections of Psalm, Old Testament, New Testament, Writing from Church Fathers (ancient and modern), hymn verse and prayer. The inclusion of commemorations from the the church calendar was also beneficial. Because the good points are so obvious and substantial, I'll only include a couple of quibbles. The ESV translation is faithful but clunky. It serves no one to preserve the biblical word order, if the resulting sentence is clunky in English. Also, I would have preferred the citations of the Writings be in the text and not in a bibliography at the end. While the Confessions are marked by article, I would have liked to find out easily which of Luther's works was the source of a given writing. Also, the writings demonstrated that while the Church Fathers are to be respected and much benefit may be obtained by their reading, they are not to be accepted uncritically. While I expected problematic material from some of the early fathers, I questioned the inclusion of Bonhoeffer.

The closest thing to a Lutheran daily English missal currently in circulation.

This helpful, beautiful resource is a trove for the liturgically-minded Christian. The daily readings are long enough to devour whole books in a reasonably-short length of time, but are not enough to overwhelm the average reader looking for a 20-minute devotion time.

The daily readings consist of the following:

A Psalm (or Psalm excerpt)

Readings (roughly one chapter in length apiece) from the Old and New Testaments

A snippet of commentary related to the readings from the Fathers and Doctors of the Church (ancient, medieval, reformational, and more contemporary)

A recommended reading from the Lutheran Confessions

A verse from a hymn in the Lutheran Service Book

A Collect of the Day

On special feast days, an explanatory note about the feast is included

The Treasury also includes the entire Psalter, the prayer offices included in the LSB, additional prayers, and other things. All Scripture excerpts are from the English Standard Version.

A seven-part ribbon is included, with instructions as to where the ribbons are meant to be. Note that some of the recommended page numbers are off by one.

I have the full-size faux-leather standard version (not the one with the gilt pages). It is a fairly handsome volume. Honestly, it feels slightly more chintzy than you would hope for a beautiful liturgical volume of its price; the paper is the color and quality of 8 1/2x11 printer paper. It’s bright white, and not all that pleasant to look at. But there are other, higher-quality versions of this volume, and I plan to get one some day.

All in all, this is a most excellent resource that should be used in every Lutheran home. The physical issues with the volume are minor when compared to the surpassing value of the content.

My husband and I (along with our children) read this daily, and will be continuing to do so for the years to come. It is not only a beautiful family tradition, but its section of early writings and historical information have helped us grow in an understanding of the early church and our own theology. It also is an excellent way to keep your family accountable to reading the bible daily, old and new testament.. The hymnody and psalmody are also lovely to sing as a household.

This is an amazing resource. Bible readings from Psalms, New Testament, and Old Testament, prayers, and writings from the church fathers for every day of the year right in the text, plus orders of service from the LSB, and catechism all in one place make this an indispensable book for any Christian household. Definitely a desert island worthy book.
