Beatrice (from Spain) and Brian (from the USA) arrived in the village of Vyshenky to examine the soils. An unforgettable summer awaits them: some research, more adventures, sincere friendship, return of history, a pinch of magic and love. Everything began with learning Ukrainian... Are you ready for the adventure?
This is a very enjoyable book and a great resource for those who are learning Ukrainian and want to have accessible, entertaining material.
Background The book was published by Ukrainian Lessons (https://www.ukrainianlessons.com/). Ukrainian Lessons Podcasts was started in 2014 by Anna Ohoiko. In 2014, inspired by the Revolution of Dignity, she decided to help people to learn Ukrainian. Everything began with a simple Facebook page. In the meantime there are six seasons of Ukrainian Lessons Podcasts (with altogether 240 podcasts) which cover podcasts for absolute beginners up to podcasts for advanced learners. There is a fantastic book about verbs with more than 500 verbs. There is also a super active and supportive Facebook group with more than 23,000 members. This book is one of the additional materials which were in the meantime published to help people learning Ukrainian.
As a source of learning The title of the book says it is for "Intermediate and Advanced Ukrainian Learners". I have been learning for roughly 3 1/2 years. I am listing in parallel to Ukrainian Lessons Podcast season 3 and I am in the last chapters of Yabluko Intermediate book. The level of the book worked really well for me. I like that the chapters in the book are short, usually only one or two pages. This means it is not too difficult to feel a sense of achievement for having read a chapter. There is list of vocabulary after each chapter which includes difficult or unfamiliar vocabulary or specific idioms. In addition there is also a short exercise which tests understanding of the chapter or selected grammar or vocabulary points. I think this whole set up is extremely well thought through. An additional bonus is that book comes with an audiobook which is read in slow Ukrainian. This means you can not only read the text, but also listen to it. The reading is engaging, there is also some music and sound effects.
Story The story evolves around Brian, Beatrice and Miroslav. Brian is American and Beatrice is Spanish. They are both students in ecology and come to Ukraine to do research related to the famous black fertile soil. They come via an international programme and end up in a small village Vyshenky. They stay there with grandmother Halya, grandfather Petro and the boy Miroslav. During their stay, they are not only working on their research, but they also learn much about life in Ukraine. Together with Miroslav they go on treasure hunt for a Cossack treasure and try to find and rescue a Cossack who was bewitched and turned into a wolf. On their journey they learn more about Ukraine and its history and have to fight against thieves who are also interested in the treasure.
