The Voidstalker Extraction

Rate this book
The galaxy is a dangerous place. Habitable planets are controlled by powerful factions, and the space between them is fair game for pirates and expansionists alike. The best way to get ahead in the Void is by hiring mercenary companies to use their ships and mechs to claim and defend territory.

Most mercenary groups are run by morally gray upstarts who will do anything for the right price. One company is the exception: the Triple C. Led by former mech pilot Henri Durroguerre, it has gained a reputation for honoring contracts and minimizing collateral damage.

Astera Ramos, a runaway turned mech pilot, is new to the Triple C. Eager to prove herself, she volunteers for a supposedly straight-forward reconnaissance job on Baldalan that quickly turns deadly.

After guiding Astera back to safety, Henri realizes that the fatal contract was not as simple as the Kolos Admiralty made it out to be. He recruits Astera to help him uncover what is happening on Baldalan, and the Triple C unwittingly becomes entangled in a sinister plot that threatens to disrupt the balance of power in the Void.

Liv Evans is the pseudonym for an Australian-born author who delights in crafting stories just as much as she enjoys devouring them.

Always one to question authority, Liv prefers to write stories with fully fleshed out characters and immersive worlds. Her favourite aspect of writing is weaving a tale that makes the characters and readers question what they think they know about themselves and the world.

Central themes in Liv's work include never blindly accepting authority, finding the strength to stand up for what is right, and the power of the human spirit.

Liv's Review Guide
When reviewing books, Liv aims to look for all of the strengths in the story. Instead of starting at 0 stars and adding more for things she likes, she starts at 5 and takes away stars for errors or things that are overlooked. Liv will not remove stars simply because a book is not one of her favourite genres. That is a matter of taste, not a reflection of the novel. If Liv believes a novel is a .5 rating, she always rounds up.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book is fantastic. The characters, plot, and writing style are all well developed. There were no (or few) issues with editing, character development, or plot.
⭐⭐⭐⭐This is a great book, but there might have been some issues with either plot, character development, or editing that affected the overall reading or quality.
⭐⭐⭐ This is a good book, but there were errors in at least two categories (character development, editing, or plot).
⭐⭐There is potential in this book, but the plot, character development, and editing need more work.
⭐There hasn't been a single one of these yet. Hopefully there never will be.

I was gifted an ARC of this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. As the first instalment in what will be a series (unsure how many books at this stage), Liv and Jay did a great job in setting up the story and making sure there was a good foundational understanding of the universe and where it would be going. I really enjoyed the characters, however I am mildly suspicious of Eggles (IYKYK) but we shall see how that unfolds later on. I am really looking forward to the next book and hope we are not waiting long to see how this space adventure unfolds.

If you are looking for an intergalactic adventure, look no further! The perfect combination of action, suspense and spice!

I loved all the detail and research that has been put into this book. It's great reading such detailed scenes because it's easier to play in my mind. The sequence for getting the mech suits ready was so good, such great attention to detail. The relationships between the different sectors on the Latagorash was also great to see. I especially love the MC and her wingmates!

As for the spice, I love that there is a contrast between the MC and her first love interest and second love interest. From their intimacy to their conversations, you can really tell a difference which I appreciate.

There are some aspects of this world that are still pretty vague and we don't know much about. Would have loved to have had a history on why they were out in space or of they had a home planet. I think we will definitely find out more about this world in the next books which I am super excited about!

Thankyou Ship It Publishing and Liv Evans for gifting me an ARC copy 🥰 absolutely cannot wait for the next one!

It’s been a while since I’ve read any Sci-Fi as I have been on a bit of a Fantasy and Romance kick lately and it was so good to get back into the genre. Especially with a book like this one! ‘The Voidstalker Extraction’ is a great plot driven Sci-Fi that is action packed, full of vibrant characters, and has just the right amount of romance threaded through it (and romance wasn’t something I was completely expecting from this one, so it was a nice surprise, especially as it didn’t take over the plot).

This novel started right in the thick of the action and I love it for that. I was already stressing over the characters within the last pages of Chapter One and from that I knew I was in for a wild ride. I was completely taken in by the language used to create these really intense scenes, helping me to really feel like I was there with them. What came with this though was a lot of technical language which I loved, there wasn’t anything I couldn’t understand within the context, but just take this into consideration when wanting to read this. For me though, it really immersed me in the world.

One thing I did find a little confusing (and only very early on), was some of the naming conventions in this world. Basically most of the characters had their name, and then their callsign (so a code name) used on missions. Once I got my head around it, it was great, and I think, used really well for some plot points later on in the novel. With some of my favourite lines occurring as a result.

The characters in this novel were wonderful! Side characters were given the same amount of care as the main characters so they all felt as vibrant as the other, just the main characters had more story time. I think this is mainly due to the multiple point of views this novel was told in, as each character was seen through different sets of eyes. I loved the main character, Aestera, it was great to follow her story throughout the novel.

Pick this one up if you are looking for an exciting Sci-Fi novel with a gripping plot and memorable characters, and elements of the story that keep you guessing right to the end.

Thank you to the publisher and the authors for gifting me this ARC (Advanced Reader Copy). I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Firstly I would like to say that at no time during reading this tense, action-packed sci-fi story did I feel that this read as if there were two authors involved in this project. This goes to say that both styles messed together perfectly to produce a enthralling story and equally charismatic characters.

Astera is everything you want in a MC. She is capable, brave, loyal, strong and mysterious. Her life has not been an easy one. She struggles between keeping her secrets hidden and wanting to feel a connection between herself and her fellow teammates and others in the company. Her story is parallel to that of the mission she takes, as there is much more to the situation than the Commander, Henri first thought. As the secrets of that are uncovered, parts of Astera's past also come to light.

The story begins with a supposedly straight-forward mission but it soon has the muscles tensing and the heart racing. The interest in what is happening on the planet Baldalan is equal to our interest in Astera as we get to know more about her, becoming truly invested in her well-being. She begins as a closed off character, not letting anyone in for fear of what they will discover, the more we find out about her, the more appealing her character becomes. The mech suit she puts on is the perfect cover for Astera, the hard mechanical suit protects her not only from the environments of the planets they visit but from people getting too close. It is not just a sci-fi action story, but a story of learning to open up and trust when that is not an easy thing to do.

The end is one of those Aaaagh moments where you look for more pages to read! It's a cliff hanger, that will get you wishing you already had the next book.

If you a lover of sci-fi, space pirates, mech warriors as well as a bit of romance, you will love newly released book by Liv Evans and Jay Thomas.

What in the void? I need book two asap.

The Voidstalker Extraction by Ship It Publishing @shipitpublishing aka Liv Evans @livevanswrites and Jay Thomas was an epic start to the series.

The VoidStalker Extraction is a sci-fi book that features Captain Henri Durroguerre, Astera and their crew mates where they investigate a planet called Baldalan. When an expected fight arises it’s up to Henri and Astera to enter the planet with all guns blazing if they have too.

You literally jump straight into this story and it's such a full on ride right until the very last page. Exactly what you need for a sci-fi book right?

Astera as a character is fully formed and just so likeable, and maybe a bit out there with pink hair but I think it adds a personality to her where she does what she wants and knows when it’s worth taking a risk.

I love Henri, I love how he is a true captain but he also allows for calculated risks to save his crew mates.

The descriptions of the merchs (human type robotic suits) used in this book are well researched and at points throughout the story I could imagine the sound metal moving as characters moved.

I highly recommend this book for sci-fi readers who have a good knowledge of the scientific world.

This book kickstarts us right into action, leaving us to hold our breath as we will Astera to make it to safety.
Astera is a character of many layers, and tucked within those layers are hidden secrets.
She’d love, more than ever, to put down those walls and let people in, but she knows it’s not safe to do so until... 🤭 You'll have to wait and see.

Eggles/Martin is a dorky and over eager character, and I wonder if perhaps there is more to his story than meets the eye.
I like that Eggles/Martin shared Bernie (his Saint Bernard) with Astera and thought it was a nice touch, but is he really as sweet, goofy, and innocent as he seems?
I think there could be a twist.

Henry is a much stronger male character with admirable qualities. He genuinely cares about the ship and its people and is prepared to put himself on the line.

The story took a turn I wasn't quite expecting towards the end but I'm glad and believe it's for the best.

The ending itself leaves you desperate for more. I'll be interested in seeing how everything pans out in the next installment.

A wonderful exploration of space travel, robotic mech enhancements and the human hearts that beat within the metallic shell.

Evans and Thomas definitely have a knack for the technical side of the technology, but this story is really about the cast of individuals that make up a bunch of mercenaries getting caught up with some space pirates.

The pace was fiery especially at the beginning and the end. Throughout the middle during the medical hiatus of one of the characters, there was a large focus on building the relationships and rapport between a lot of different faces that came and went. So if you like character driven stories this one is definitely for you.

There was a romantic element with some mild spicy scenes, written respectfully.

Ends on a cliffhanger which leads one to believe the pace will pick up significantly in the next instalment.

I feel like I haven’t read sci-fi in so long and it was amazing to dive into a world packed with mechs, badass pilots and all the technical jargon that really immerses you into the book.

I love a good sassy fmc and Astera was the perfect blend of sass and strength. I really loved her backstory and character development and how it brought out her kickass, can-do attitude!!

I also enjoyed the dynamic between Astera and Henri and watching their relationship develop from professional, to friendship, to lust/love was so sweet!! I love that it didn’t feel rushed and just happened naturally over time.

If you enjoyed Firefly or Pacific Rim then this is definitely the book for you!!

I was gifted an ARC of this book, so thank you!

This book started off with a bang - literally. I was very optimistic considering how strong the start was. Intriguing characters, excellent plot line, and a sense that everything is futuristic.
For me, there was no moment of climax where stakes were super high, and because of this, the plot began to plateau. I enjoyed both of the main characters, but the side characters for me needed a little more depth, only popping up every so often throughout the book. Eggles was a character that also had two chapters from his perspective at the start of the novel, but we never heard from him again.

An excellent sci-fi, full of adventure!

I enjoyed the universe, and felt that it was definitely something had me hooked into this one whilst flying in a big metal bird (that's right - I read this one in a single sitting, between Sydney and Auckland!)

I cannot wait for book 2 in the series!

NOTE: I was given a copy by one of the authors for review, and this has not by any way influenced my review.

This is an excellent sci-fi adventure story with really great characters and a well-thought-out universe.

The two main characters are both unique in their own right yet share some of the best qualities in all heroes and heroines.

If you like action with a little mystery, romance with some spice, and large walking mechanical machines fighting each other then this is the story for you.
