Queen’s Birds of Prey #3

Judith: Queen’s Birds of Prey: Paranormal Shape Shifter Romance

Rate this book
Queen’s Birds of Prey Series Judith and her warrior sisters had been around for several millennia, their time of fighting in wars and conquering kingdoms now a distant memory. Before Queen Dante passed, she graced her prized warriors—the falcon, hawk, eagle, phoenix, vulture, and owl—with humanity as well as immortality. With two of their sisters mated, Jude and Piper were finding themselves a little envious of the large homes they had. Jude and Piper both were on the hunt for nicer accommodations. Christmas was just around the corner, and neither was sure if they wanted to attend the big gala that had been arranged this year in the old castle where they had all once lived. Duncan was his mother’s son, thru and thru. He had inherited the gift of foresight as well as immortality and a few other magical traits. Jude being his mate, had been foreseen by his mother, Queen Dante, several millennia ago, and Queen Dante had kept Duncan’s identity a secret from them all. When Duncan approached her, Jude didn’t know whether to stay put or flee. Being a warrior, she wasn’t afraid of any man, it’s what being with him represented, being a queen, Jude wasn’t sure she was ready for that. She wasn’t sure she would ever be ready for that.

I was given the opportunity to read an ARC of this book and I'm so thrilled to have done so. "Judith" is the third book in the "Queen's Birds of Prey" series by Kathi S. Barton. To be perfectly honest, I started reading the prologue and the entire premise grabbed hold and I was completely enchanted by the entire book. (I'm going to have to backtrack and read book one, Mercy and book two, Blaze as soon as I finish this review. In the meantime, let me tell you a little about what to expect. A magical queen who gave her all to protect her castle, her people, her village, and most of all, her parents and son. Having the gift of foresight, she could see what was coming and laid out very dramatic and specific plans that would need to be put in place more than a millennium from when they were first designed. Her son, Duncan, and her parents have been in hiding their entire life in order to keep them protected. Jude, aka Judith the eagle, was to be Duncan's mate. The chemistry between these two absolutely warmed my heart. The love, devotion, and loyalty of family, whether by blood or choice, was what every person known to man hopes for. Having read this one out of order, I know for a fact I have to read the rest of this series. It's outstanding.

Overall, Duncan and Judith's book was a good read. I wouldn't say amazing or that there was much that will have me remembering this book compared to the other two that I've read in this series.

Duncan has pretty much known, I guess since he hit adulthood, that one of his mother's birds of prey was going to be his mate. Knowing Judith was to be his mate, Duncan has been preparing the castle just like his mother instructed him to do for him and his mate to live in.

Judith knew her sisters were a bit excited if not hesitant for the Christmas party taking place at the castle. However, she can't figure out just why Mercy is so insistent that Judith attend. That is until she's flying to the castle and lands right in front of the king of the lands and discovers that they're mates.

Like I said at the beginning, this one wasn't up to par as what I'm used to reading. Really there is nothing wrong with the book, but at the same time it doesn't really seem to add much more to the story beyond the birds finding Duncan, Queen Dante's son, who they never knew about.

The Queens birds are back and its time for Duncan to meet his bride. As with all the birds so far, love has been a learning challenge and meeting their mates was quite the surprise. Judith was unprepared to find out that she was to be the new Queen and did not think she was qualified for the position. Duncan has waited forever for the time to be right and he is determined to make Judith see they are meant to be together. Christmas is the time for miracles and the perfect time to claim his mate. Secrets are revealed, some good and bad . The new king and Queen have a mess to unravel and nothing is ever easy. I love the characters, the birds are just so straight forward its hard not to like them. The flash backs give such a clear insight on how they became who they are that it made them more real to me. Another great addition to this unique series ,I look forward to the next adventure.

What I liked most about this book was its uniqueness. The prologue was on the long side, but as this is the first book in the series that I have read, I found it quite well-written and illuminating. I really liked the premise and storyline. You get a bit of a dark fairy tale vibe, a royal romance vibe, along with a tale of magic. No spoilers, but the origin story of these bird shifters is simply amazing! Duncan and Judith, though, really bring this story to life. Duncan is so open and loving, so devoted to his people and his long deceased mother. Judith, despite all the power she houses, is not sure she wants or can handle the power that comes with being with Duncan. But these two are mates, so work it out they must! A very interesting and intriguing story, great for all PNR fans!

I so needed more of this story. I have read the new books that have come out so far but I need to go back to read the older ones. I stopped reading paranormal for a while because everything started to sound the same but Ms Kathi has me hooked again. I can't wait for this of this series.
