Plague Doctor

Rate this book
A menace stalks the streets of Victorian Buffalo. Costumed like a medieval physician, it brings panic, sickness, and death to a city already in turmoil over automaton rights. Fresh off a boat from Poland, Kasper Czak can’t let politics or mysterious figures deter him. He’s willing to work anywhere for an honest wage, including as caretaker at the Lost Waifs Orphanage.
Tori Anderson, a young woman with a withered arm, also works at Lost Waifs, where there’s never enough time, hands, or money for their young charges. Locked down at the orphanage with ailing children, cranky steam units, and the handsome Kasper, Tori wonders if she’ll survive. But when she comes face to face with the plague doctor, she discovers her true strength.

Another fine effort in the Buffalo Steampunk series, this book takes the reader to a different part of Buffalo. Welcome to the dark side of the town here. The vivid descriptions give a real O Twist feel to the book.

Fans of the old Hammer horror films will really enjoy this book. There is a real feeling that Bela or Boris could be traipsing about the dark streets of 19th-century Buffalo.

There is a strong undercurrent of romance in this book. That romance can blossom in abject poverty and suffering is a celebration of the human spirit. Here the age-old question of what is beauty is brought to the forefront. Truly this book illustrates that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Kasper's feelings for Tori are beautiful to read.

The overarching battle for equal rights is a strong subplot in this novel. This is the Buffalo Steampunk world on the seamier side. Dark, and foreboding but with hope and love, this book has it all. Recommended to fans of Laura Strickland. Recommended to fans of this series. Recommended to fans of gothic horror.

Warning: The Writing is Contagious!
Laura Strickland is a gifted storyteller. She masterfully weaves engaging characters into addictive plots with first-rate world-building. The Plague Doctor is no exception. Set in a steampunk Buffalo, New York, the book deals with the very real concerns of epidemics, bioterrorism, immigration, minorities, and negative self-image. There’s even romance. It is food for the mind and soul as well as being a cracking good tale!
