The Glories of Divine Grace is a critical book in anyone's spiritual formation. For; as the subtitle indicates; it is A Fervent Exhortation to All to Preserve and to Grow in Sanctifying Grace. We know that through Baptism we become children of God and heirs of Heaven; that we receive thereby Sanctifying Grace and thus have a share in the life of God Himself. But how many Catholics think little more about the nature of Sanctifying Grace and what it means? Not after this book! Impr. 447 pgs; PB
Scheeben studied at the Gregorian University at Rome under Carlo Passaglia and Giovanni Perrone from 1852 to 1859 and lived in Collegium Germanicum. He was ordained to the priesthood on 18 December 1858. He taught dogmatic theology at the diocesan seminary of Cologne from 1860 to 1875.
"The Glories of Divine Grace" by Matthias J. Scheeben is a deeply insightful and profound exploration of the concept of grace in Christian theology, particularly from a Roman Catholic perspective. This work is recognized as a classic in its field, highly regarded for its thorough and contemplative approach.
Scheeben's work delves into the origins, requirements, and effects of grace, offering a comprehensive treatise that is both enlightening and challenging. It is an essential resource for reigniting faith, especially for those who may feel lukewarm in their spiritual journey. It's particularly appreciated by Roman Catholic priests and laypeople alike who are committed to the belief in eternal life.
This book is not a casual read. Its significance in spiritual development demands contemplation and a deep engagement with the text. While it is not overly complex, it requires a certain level of catechesis, preferably from a traditional perspective, to fully grasp its depth.
Scheeben presents an introduction to the power of the Holy Spirit and Sanctifying Grace in a language that is accessible yet profound. The book is described as a "hidden jewel," essential for all Christians, not just those of the Catholic faith.
The clarity and sincerity with which Scheeben writes suggest his close relationship with God. He successfully expands the reader's understanding of grace and ignites a desire to gain and grow in it. His writing impresses upon the reader the critical importance of cooperating with grace, providing insights that are both theological and practical. These insights, drawn from his own reflections, the teachings of the saints, and the Fathers of the Church, offer a comprehensive view that enlightens and inspires.
In summary, "The Glories of Divine Grace" is a powerful, intricate, and essential read for those seeking a deeper understanding of grace in the Christian faith. Its relevance and profound impact on spiritual growth make it a highly recommended work for anyone on a journey of faith, especially within the Catholic tradition.
An exhaustive treatise on grace...its origins, requirements and effects. This will kick start anyone who is lukewarm in the faith. I think this is considered a classic and must read by Roman Catholic priests that still believe in eternal life. It is not a fast and easy read due to its importance in ones spiritual health. It is not difficult to understand but it requires contemplation if you have not been catechized by a somewhat traditional parish.
An introduction, in common language, that just scratches the surface of the power of the Holy Spirit and Sanctifying Grace. A hidden jewel that is a must read for all Christians
