I kept wanting a happy ending, but that was not to be...at least, not as I had hoped it would be. This is a story of two Jewish boys who are taken from their home and through difficult circumstances they end up as enemies...Mendel becomes a rabbi and Yaakov is raised in the priesthood and never knew he was born a Jew. This book covers the time from 1850-1882 and the persecutions of the Jews in Russia. The Rabbi and the Priest is a realistic historical portrait of Jewish life under the late Czars, when the oppressor was not the Commissar and Politburo, but Peasant, Church and Noble."
