Sigrid Undset (1882-1949) est une écrivaine norvégienne, essentiellement connue en France par ses romans Kristin Lavransdatter, Jenny et la Femme fidèle. Elle a reçu, en 1928, le prix Nobel de littérature. Gidske Anderson, mélangeant savamment anecdotes, réflexions et des interrogations à la trame du récit, s'applique à retracer, dans une langue claire et vigoureuse, les influences psychologiques et les événements qui ont façonné l'auteure et qu'on retrouve, transposés, dans ses oeuvres tout au long de sa vie : son enfance, l'école de Ragna Nielsen, personnage marquant du féminisme norvégien, son travail d'employée de bureau, ses premiers succès littéraires, son mariage avec le peintre Anders Castus Svarstad et la naissance de leurs enfants, leur divorce et la conversion de Sigrid au catholicisme, l'exil aux États-Unis... Sigrid Undset s'y révèle attachante, déroutante parfois, et toujours profondément humaine.

About the author

Gidske Anderson was a Norwegian journalist, editor, and author known for her international reporting and insightful biographies. She worked for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and the newspaper Arbeiderbladet, serving as foreign correspondent in Paris and the United States. From 1967 to 1972, she led Arbeiderbladet’s foreign affairs section and later returned to NRK as its Paris correspondent.
Anderson made her literary debut in 1962 with Mørk fest and went on to publish works of poetry, travel writing, memoirs, and biographies. Her subjects included key Norwegian figures such as Halvard Lange, Trygve Bratteli, and Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset. Her autobiography, Det hendte meg, appeared in 1983.
In recognition of her contributions to journalism, she received the Narvesen Prize in 1962. From 1981 until her death in 1993, she served on the Norwegian Nobel Committee and chaired it briefly in 1990.
