A Christian Historical Adventure set in Regency England with slow-burn romance and a supernatural twist Part six in an epic-length serial novel
Lady Wynwood has discovered the gardening notebooks belonging to Bianca Jadis, the deceased mistress of the late Lord Wynwood and a former member of the treasonous group, the Citadel. However, the team is dismayed to discover that part of the notebooks has been written in some sort of code.
Mr. Sol Drydale has kept hidden the fact that the notebooks have been found because he is unable to fully trust his superior officers at the Ramparts, the secret branch of the Alien Office. After all, when one of his own was kidnapped, the men who should have assisted him had seemed more interested in obtaining the Root potion that gives men supernatural strength.
But then two Ramparts agents bring information about an opportunity to capture the poisoner Apothecary Jack, one of the members of the Citadel. Sol is ordered to integrate these newcomers into his group, then plan a daring raid upon Jack’s new laboratory.
When things take an unexpected turn, Sol is faced with a terrible choice. Will he disobey orders, or will he forfeit the life of someone he holds dear?
PLEASE NOTE: Like the novels published in Jane Austen’s time, this is a novel in multiple parts. Each volume has a completed story arc, but this is NOT a stand-alone novel and the story continues in volume 7.
Just when I thought things could not get worse, it does!
Faith gets tested in this book, even from characters which shown strong solid faith up to this point.
You need to read each book in order since it is a serial.
Through the evil and darkness and brokenness, a lot of spiritual truths and focus on God is spread out through the book which gives the reader hope for happy endings.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.*
In this episode, one of the Ramparts, similar to the CIA of today but in 19th century England, was shot as a ritual I guess you could say. She was chosen by Jack, one of the most evil duo, to be a martyr. Last episode Laura was The Prisoner who spent most of her time with the other part of the duo, Maxim. This time someone close to her is The Martyr. It isn’t clear why he does what he does, other than he's a bit crazy. Much of the book is chasing Jack down and getting him to give up secrets.
Perhaps this wasn’t my favorite of these spy books but still quite good. The epilogue is a bit of a shocker, that's all I’ll give away.
The faith element is in struggling with God. Lots of praying, lots of seeking wisdom, but acting according to their own will in the end. It will be interesting in the next book to see how God shows them how His will would have been best. I think that’s already in the works.
This was read by virtual voice with a British accent so it was different. Not great, but interesting.
This series has become an absolute favorite. So brilliant! This one kept me on the edge of my seat! But do read these books in order, from the beginning.
I went into Lady Wynwood’s Spies with high hopes, especially since I’ve enjoyed some of Camille Elliot’s earlier books. However, I was completely unprepared for how dark this series is. I strongly dislike horror, gore, and sadistic villains, and this series leans heavily into all three. I’m writing this review for readers like me who would want a warning beforehand.
From the start, every character carries deep trauma, anger toward God, or spiritual wounds, which already made the tone heavier than expected. But the real shock came from the villains, who are far more gruesome than anything I’ve ever encountered in Christian fiction. Their violence is senseless, graphic, and extreme—far beyond what I believe fits the genre or the faith themes the books claim to include.
By the time I reached book six, I realized I had ignored many red flags simply because I wanted to see how the story ended. The darkness kept escalating until it felt unmistakably like horror. At that point, I felt spiritually prompted to stop reading, and I’m grateful I did.
My biggest concern is the portrayal of God throughout the series. He comes across as distant, uninvolved, and ineffective in the lives of devout characters who suffer terribly without clear divine help. As a Christian who has personally experienced God’s intervention and healing, this depiction deeply troubled me. It does not reflect the God I know—present, powerful, compassionate, and faithful.
It saddens me to write such a negative review, but I couldn’t stay silent knowing other readers might stumble into this series expecting Christian suspense and instead find graphic horror and a misrepresentation of God’s character. My hope is simply to spare others that experience and to affirm that the true God is loving, near, and actively involved in the lives of His people.
You really need to read the first 5 volumes of this series before you get to this one. In case you’re not aware, this is part of an epic-length serial novel, so you really do need to read in order. Also, each volume ends with a cliffhanger (and the one ending this volume is worse than some of the others). This volume even has a number of chapters that end in cliffhangers, and then Elliot goes off to bring the reader up to date on other plot threads! Thankfully I was able to read the whole thing in one day – otherwise I would have been up all night to finish it.
This book covers a very short period of time – not much more than one 24 hour day. There’s an awful lot that happens during that one day, and it all gets described in detail. I felt pretty wrung out by the end. I’m glad she doesn’t wait a year before the next volume comes out!
If you like strong Victorian characters (both male and female), combined with suspense (and dastardly villains), combined with applying Biblical principles to daily life, I think you’ll really go for this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
You really need to read the first 5 volumes of this series before you get to this one as this is a serial type series that always ends in a cliff hanger although things do get solved to some extent in each novel. This book covers a very short period of time with lots of things happening at once and was quite heart wrenching at times so much so I couldn't put it down. I am so glad the wait for the next book isn't a long period of time. In this episode not as much as usual gets resolved and it seems more like two steps back for the team. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Lady Wynwood’s Spies series has me hooked. Diabolical mad men trying to create superhuman strength soldiers for Napoleon’s army and the band of unlikely spies trying to stop them has me eagerly anticipating the next book each time I finish the one I’m currently reading. Each book lives you hanging… 🧗 This was no exception! More details are shared and even more intrigue is included in the Martyr. I am left wondering how the evil guys are going to be defeated.
I received a copy of this book. No expectations were given in regards to a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This volume has really been an upsetting result to this whole storyline. Although the storyline was exciting, there still doesn't seem to be a solution. I guess I'll have to read Vol. 7.
I'm getting tired! This is taking too long and there are too many twists and turns. It's too much! I'm ready for this series to conclude because it's become quite convoluted.
Martyr by Camille Elliot Lady Wynwood’s Spies Volume Six This series is incredible. It keeps my attention as I never know what the next page will bring. It’s so unique. I love the Christian theme and the unique paranormal part of it. Phoebe Sauber is working to grow the Goldensuit plants they took from Apothecary Jack. Her friend, Keriah is working on making sedatives to stop those on the Root. Unfortunately, their friend and fellow Ramparts agent, Sep, may be dead. They haven’t seen him since he’d been shot after Maxham took Laura. Michael Colton-Jones knows he’s dying from the Root that had been forced on him. Many other players are in these stories, including two new agents in this story: Mr. Benjamin and Mr. Norton. Looking forward to the next volume to see what happens next. Every volume tells a story but be prepared because they end on a cliffhanger. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Once again the author takes us deep into the world of subterfuge and dare I say possible treason! Lady Wynwood is trying to deal with the after effects of her imprisonment, which is causing a great deal of consternation in this normally in control person. Her faith is keeping her going, something others just don’t seem to understand.
Keriah is busy trying to create an antidote to the Root while attempting to break the code Bianca used in her notebooks. Continuing to experiment, she painstakingly copies these books to make sure the information is not lost.
A new potion comes into play - will this be better than the Root or cause even more havoc? Attempting to capture Jack, will the raid go as planned? An unexpected ending will leave you waiting for the 7th installment in this epic serial novel.
