We Are the Ocean helps children discover a personal connection to water. The author beautifully describes the importance of the ocean in sustaining life of all living plants and animals. Through the eyes of children with their doggie companions, the question of “what is the ocean?” is answered.
Captivating illustrations and imagery show the continuous cycle of water on earth and teach young readers that water is in all the cells of plants and animals, and even in their own bodies. Readers will be surprised to find that their drinking water was "once in the bodies of dinosaurs!" When children learn that the ocean is part of them, they will hopefully learn to love and appreciate it, and take care of the ocean as they grow older.
With soothing illustrations, the wonders of the ocean and importance of water to our world comes across loud and clear.
The illustrations make this book. They are beautifully created and draw in with every scene. The lighter coloring and natural images calm, and still invite to dreaming. There's a touch of whimsical and imagination in every single one, while they bring across the wonders of nature and life. It's enjoyable to simply flip through these and gaze at them time and again.
The text is kept short and sweet, giving just enough direction to let the illustrations take over. The vocabulary is age appropriate. There is a concept or two, which might need to be explained to younger listeners (such as cells and humans being made of water), but nothing expands past the intended audience level. The entire book is a homage to water and brings across the importance it carries to the world and life on it. The messages are there, but never overpower the simpler wonder.
It's a wonderfully constructed book, which is sure to become a gazing favorite. I received a complimentary DRC and found myself caught up in the pages.
I read this book and thought it was done so well. It is such an easy read for young children. Also, it makes you really think about separate water systems and the ocean and how they all interact together. The illustrations were especially beautiful with a classic look about them.
Definitely a book I would recommend for young readers. Learn about our world and its animals! Love it.
Cute read to get kids interested in helping save the ocean by basically saying all living things need water. The illustrations are beautiful and it reads sort of like a poem. Overall, great read for young kids.
I bought this through the Free The Ocean website so each product purchased removes 10 pieces of plastic from the world's ocean so it was a nice read that I knew also helped the ocean as well. If you do plan to pick this one up, consider going through them rather than Amazon or another retailer.
The first thing I noticed about the book are its calming, beautiful illustrations. The color scheme is soothing and gentle, and the pictures are often sweet and playful.
Each page contains a line or two of text introducing the journey that water takes as it moves from cloud to rain to ground to being part of our bodies. The book not only explains the water cycle but also helps to show the connection between humans and nature and the way we depend on one another.
I've read other books by Captain Paul Watson, but they were aimed at older kids and more of an informative type of text, and are great resources in our home library. This book is really different, very gentle and perfect to read with preschool or very early elementary-aged readers. I can see myself gifting this to friends and family, and I would love to offer a copy to my daughter's preschool classroom.
All in all, I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for soothing reads for preschoolers or looking to begin introducing nature or the water cycle to their readers.
Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions my own.
