Weet je wat zo geweldig aan een WK jaar is? Ja, natuurlijk veel rugby op de Nederlandse televisie dankzij Ziggo, aandacht in de kranten en hopelijk veel nieuwe leden bij alle clubs. Maar buiten dat, een stroom aan nieuwe boeken, niet bepaald allemaal over het WK, waar de liefhebbers alleen maar blij van worden.

In de serie Remarkable Grounds verschenen al boeken over cricket, voetbal en golf maar dankzij het WK in Frankrijk hebben we nu dus ook ‘ons’ boek. En de titel ‘remarkable’ is nog een understatement, wat een prachtige stadions. Van de voorkant, Haven Oval in New South Wales, Australië worden we meegenomen over de hele wereld naar bijzondere plekken waar gerugbyd wordt. Natuurlijk komen de nationale tempels voorbij, Twickenham, Murrayfield, Aviva, Principality, Eden Park enz maar ook de geboorteplaats van 7’s, Melrose, passeert de revue en vanzelfsprekend de plek waar onze sport begon Rugby School in Warwickshire.

Elk stadion komt met zijn eigen verhaal, bijzondere wedstrijden, naamgevers etc naast de meest prachtige foto’s. Interessante weetjes te over, het dak van het nationale stadion van Singapore, één van de stops van het 7’s circuit sluit in slechts 20 minuten om 95% van de plaatsen te overdekken en één van de tribunes van het Stade Marcel-Michelin, de thuisbasis van Clermont is vernoemd naar Jean-Francois Philponau die tijdens een wedstrijd in 1976 overleed toen hij door de bliksem was getroffen.

Er is echter één groot nadeel aan dit boek. Als je de bijna 200 bladzijden op 29 x 25 cm formaat in hardcover uithebt, is je ‘to do’ lijst waarschijnlijk aangevuld met 50 nieuwe locaties.
