Hanover and Great Britain, 1740-1760: Diplomacy and Survival

Rate this book
This is a study of the political, economic and, above all, military relations between the Electorate of Hanover and Great Britain during the years between the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession and the death of George II in the middle of the Seven Years War. It is a period of great significance in the history of both nations - the ascending Great Power and the stagnating continental principality, with little in common except the fact that both were ruled by the same man. This study illuminates the part played by King and Elector in his two countries and highlights the role of his key advisors, notably the remarkable Baron Münchhausen. -- Hanover in Mid-18th Century; 1 The Close of the Walpole Era and the French Invasion Threat, 1740-1741; 2 The Carteret Years, 1742-1744; 3 The Last Years of the War of the Austrian Succession, 1745-1748; 4 The Münchhausen-Newcastle Partnership, 1749-1756; 5 The Seven Years War to the Death of George II; 6 Economic and Cultural Aspects; 7 The 'Opinions' of the Hanoverian Ministers, 1744 and 1757; Conclusions; The New Reign; Sources; Subject Index
