How to Raise a Plant Baby: A Beginner's Guide to Happy Plants

Rate this book
Urbanization has changed the way we garden and raise plants in our homes. As large spaces have become a luxury, the sprawling lawns in a house are a rare sight. They are replaced now by plants grown in small spaces, often indoors, with limited light, water and nutrition. This calls for relearning the principles of gardening that suit this new paradigm.

Written for all plant parents trying to raise their plant babies in an urban setting, this book is built on basic principles that keep plants healthy and covers all topics that any plant parent need to know-how to prepare their space, how to choose the right plants for their home, how to care for the plants and keep them happy and how to get family and friends started with plants of their own.

With stories from the Lazy Gardener community, supplemented with chapter-end summaries, explanatory illustrations and plant lists, the book will equip the reader to ask the right questions as they continue to garden and cultivate their knowledge of gardening. Useful for both new and experienced plant parents, Vinayak Garg's How to Raise a Plant Baby guides them and explains everything they need to know.

A lot has changed in past few decades. Urbanization and global industrial revolution has changed our perspective towards living. Amidst the high rises and luxury limelights, somewhere we're growing distant with nature, long forgotten the sprawling garden of roses or the small herb garden across the kitchen, plants are replaced by electronics. In this book 'How to Raise a Plant Baby' the author will help you reverse this situation by cultivating a hobby of gardening with beginner friendly preciseness to bring peace and harmony in life and take a step towards wellness.

Being a person who is eating fruits and veggies fresh from home years after years, who has seen her father planting Spinach, Papaya, Tomato, Coriander, Chillies, Green beans, Grourd, Pumpkin and is surrounded by Mango, Jackfruit, Guava trees that are way older than me I myself consider a privileged person to have that space around me, gardening excites me. If you're a person like me who gets excited even when seeing a small green patch but don't think have green thumb then this book is for you. This book is a step by step beginner's guide to understand and develop the knowledge to be a good gardener. I'm immensely grateful that this book has covered some of the basics but crucial points for beginners. It will give a basic all rounder information for a good foundation. A careful selection of plants for new gardeners.

Talking about the writing, it's in very simple Layman language, has some beautiful illustrations which I personally felt appealing. Each and every point is described in great details so as to avoid any confusion and all the informations are streamlined in a good manner. However it's targeted to beginners only and for advanced gardeners this book might not be fruitful. Recommended to anyone who is considering gardening.

We took up gardening during the lockdown when we were starved for things to do and as a family, this was the best thing that had us occupied for a couple of hours each day. In the space we have around our house we started off and now we are surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers that are seen in pots of all sizes all around the house.
But sometimes, the plants wither off and die for no reason at all and we are at loss and that’s when books like this come as a boon.
Right from the first chapter, the author captures our attention and it is one of the best guides I have read so far. It is simple and practical among other things that make us want to indulge more in our favorite hobby.
The author has shared his experience and enthusiasm in taking care of plants and in turn, will inspire you to start your little garden.
The tips are structured and easy to understand and follow. The recap at the end of the chapters catches the gist of the chapter that can be used for a quick recall. The explanatory illustrations help relate to the relevant text. The FAQ section answers almost all the doubts that might crop up once you take up this hobby.
This book is perfect for a novice gardener as it has all information about the subject. Be it selecting the plant, where to place them, and selecting the right type of plants, this book will surely turn you into a proud plant parent.
I liked the helpful plant list that lists out the plants you can buy according to your choice of a new gardener, ones that need too much light, low maintenance ones, plants that are toxic to pets, etc, including plants that need to be handled carefully.
In all, I would say that this is a perfect book for beginners which makes the beginning of the journey a breeze and an interesting one too. This book is packed with so much knowledge that it not only helps to start building your garden but also has information on how to sustain the ones that you have. The tips and tricks that the author has shared are sure to work wonders! This is one of those books that you can come back to for a quick reference or clear some doubts. Whether you have a small space or a huge garden this book is sure to help you turn the place into a beautiful one.
5/5 stars from me.

All of us living in urban spaces, at some point, dreamt of having our own garden, nurture and grow plants — whether for flowers, homegrown organic vegetables, landscaping or interior decoration. With limited home space, natural light and air, these plants are naturally constrained for growth indoors or in shaded home balconies.

How to raise a plant baby is the definitive guide for all those who aspire to grow plants in urban, confined spaces. The author begins by recollecting how he transformed into the Lazy gardener beginning from his childhood memories of his parent’s growing plants at home. The next chapter is about the common myths and demystifying them, some even weird ones like ‘Plants will kill me in my sleep’.

The third chapter is about the common plants that are grown at home and their characteristics. The fourth chapter is about houseplants while the fifth and sixth are about preparing for plant parenthood, an important aspect most of us tend to overlook.

The next part is dedicated to elaborating the four important pillars of growing plants — light, water, soil and nutrition. The final part explains the ongoing care required by plants — trimming, repotting, pruning, propagating. There is an elaborate FAQs section at the end along with plant lists.

As the title signifies, the book is a beginner’s guide for all things plants, and the author excels in narrating the concepts in a lucid language. Generally, a book with such concepts tends to turn theoretical but the author makes sure to engage the reader, with few illustrations, summarizing in tabular format and concise information.

Also, the information and ideas presented in the book are not exotic or expensive and can be implemented by anyone, with least effort. The book hence makes for multiple reads, like a guide the reader can refer to whenever faced with a similar situation w.r.t their plants.

If you have always been enthusiastic about growing your own garden then look no further, pick a copy of this book.

We all have something to gain from plants in our lives, so in a way they are common denominator- something that we can celebrate, care about and find joy in."
.
I have been following Lazy Gardner's tips and tricks for a few years now. Seeing them in the compilation of a book made me more than excited.
Being a plant parent, we know how crucial it is to take care of all the little things associated with the plants and how therapeutic it is to care for them, seeing them grow and flourish. It is also saddening to see them wither and in dying condition. It happens at times when we are unable to detect the root cause of their problems despite being experienced.
.
How to Raise a Baby has all the plant related and gardening solutions for beginners as well as experienced plant moms/dads.
Right from deciding on adopting a gardening hobby, plants space and nurseries to the plant types, their basic needs and treatments, author Vinayak had come up with the ultimate guidance of efficient gardening.
Before delving into the chapters, the author introduced us with the life and relationship between him and the green babies which I absolutely adored. He had rectified few of the common myths we still believed about plants. The short and quick summary at the end of each chapter made the read even more simplified and adaptable. The creative illustrations were no way behind the limelight.
Narrated in one of the simplest version of the language, this is definitely going to help even the novice. The step by step methods of each of the gardening methods had been elaborately listed.
The green world has more in its bag to offer and take as well. They too are prone to stressful conditions and enjoy good company of surrounding fellow plants and everything existing around. Being a plant patent isn't easy, but it is also soul satisfying at the same. We get excited and hopeful seeing even a tiny bud growing from that stem, or blooming of those petals. Hence, it is extreme necessary to provide all the essentials for their healthy growth. This book is no better than an excellent guide for better plant patenting.

‘We have not inherited the world from our forefathers — we have borrowed it from our children.’ I remember these lines from my school days. The Earth has lungs. We call them trees. And every tree was a plant before becoming a tree. This book has a special on those tiny little plants.⁣

The book has 3 parts viz., The growth of a gardener, What your plants need to live and be happy, Ongoing care for your plant. First part is a kind of introduction which deals with what, where, when of gardening, why plants are important and how they enrich our life. It also explores the truth behind some common plant related myths. Second part focuses upon the requirements for proper growth and healthy life of the plant. The third one tells about the further nurturing and caring of the plant. Some chapters ends with a quick recap which helps in remembering information on the fingertips.⁣

Gardening is a skill. It's not like that one day you wake up, bring some plants, keep them in a ‘gamla’, give them a cup of water to ‘drink’ and Tada! You become a gardener. Selecting the right plant for your home or wherever you want to raise it depends upon a lot of factors. And this books mentions all of them with explanation in a very simple manner. Naturally, a thought comes that 'Why to read a whole book when you can just google it or watch a YouTube video?'. Agreed. But most probably those articles or videos will provide you just information. But here the author shares his own experiences along with the information so it feels more like a story than a guidebook. There are a lot of adorable illustrations too which acts as cherry on cake. ⁣

All in all HOW TO RAISE A PLANT BABY can certainly be helpful for all the people willing to have a lovely little garden of their own and welcome the blessings of becoming a plant parent.⁣

On A Parting Note... It All Starts With A Seed.

I don't consider myself a gardener in fact, far from it. But I am a plant mommy and currently nursing more than 10 varieties of plants in more than 20 pots. So yeah, I have made myself quite a green heaven. But I am still learning about my plants' needs and I still have a way to go before I am confident that I can raise any type of plants. If you are someome like me, or considering to get some plants of your own for the first time than @vinayak_garg 's HOW TO RAISE A PLANT BABY, will surely aid you in your green journey.
Divided into three parts, the book, not only tackles all the problems that gardeners face on a daily basis, but also provides healthy solutions to them. Understanding the basic needs of a plant, combined with the understanding of the environment that it is going to live in, goes a long way to keep a plant happy. Raising plants is not just getting a plant from the nursery, but also the upkeep of the same. Most plants, as I have found out, are moody. So the best way to go to pick a plant that's sturdy and can survive less care. This book can help you make that decision and make you confident enough to venture to other plants.
Personally, I find it difficult to raise blooming plants. Either they won't bloom or they do and they die. I have on my hands, the chlorophyll of several blooming plants, that withered to death in my care. So I mostly stick to leafy greens. Reading the text, has helped in find the courage to get another one and try again. It is a bit of a rocky road to have healthy plants consistently.

I am sure I will go back to the book again and again to figure out how to take better care of any plant. There are a few rules that applies to every single plant and those have been highlighted in the text very clearly. Have those basic things down pat and you are already half way through. I also loved the illustrations. They make everything come together. So, yes, I can definitely recommend this book to anyone at all times.

-a Chinese proverb

The book is a complete guide for anyone who loves plants but is not sure about the methods and techniques one has to follow to grow and nurture them. It is especially for people living in urban areas where people get confined space.

Have you ever plucked fruit right from the plant & consumed❓ How does it feel❓

🌿This is a beautiful book about raising a 'plant baby', a beginner's guide. The best part about this book is it's easy language, b/w illustrations & the engaging writing style which gets you immersed right from the start with the author's childhood stories revolving but, around plants. One is reminded of one's childhood & nostalgia grips over.

I remember spending summer vacations shaking the jamun tree branches with cousins standing with a bedsheet to catch the fruit & then eating it with salt n messing our clothes.. i remember eating grapes from my neighbour & classmates garden & swinging on the swing, playing ghar-ghar with tomatoes, radish, carrots, peas plucked from kitchen garden of another one. I remember plucking "torii" a vegetable/ gourd for my mother because she liked it. I have handful of such memories & wonder if my kid will make some too..

My mother is a plant lover, i myself have a plants all around me & it's so satisfying growing one from a seed or sapling.. sharing cuttings or sometimes stealing too. It's so destressing & satiating. I love to use cow dung as manure & am yet to explore other options. My Gardner is not allowed to cut/ prune my plants w/out my permission, i am that possesive about them. They have been with me through thick & thin.

This book is the best investment for a beginner which resolves common myths & questions, basics, trimming, tilling of soil, repotting, propagating, what plant leaves tell us about it, shares stories from plant lovers , ideas for indoor plants & FAQs. It's an exhaustive database on all you need to know to be a plant parent. Grow your food & experience the joy. It's priceless.

🪴 Personally I love to grow plants, but there was a struggle I faced. It is that how to grow a particular plant, how should I maintain them, how to protect it from pests, is the stem needed to planted or seed, what fertiliser can I use..and much more. If you have any elders or known specialist, they might help you. As a normal person, we browse through internet and it provides many results which literally confuses us and we finally give up on growing plants. For such buddies, this book is a rescue!

🪴 Author speaks about his personal relationship with Plants. How to form an environment to cultivate the plants, how to choose the right plant, how to understand what the plant needs and much more. Being Urban, and thinking of Gardeing might be little challenging, not unless you read this book. Illustrations are much helpful. It is mainly divided into 3 parts: The Growth of a Gardener, What Your Plants Need to Live and Be Happy & Ongoing Care For Your Plant.

🪴 Mini Plant Experiment literally motivates the readers to try. Gardening is an art that heals the mind and protects the nature. 'Spend time with Nature' is the advice given by majority of psychiatrist. But these days due to urbanisation and lack of time, we don't find much of the 'Healing Nature'. Why can't we form one, may be a small one that benefits all of us?

In his new book, How to Raise a Plant Baby, author Vinayak Garg, promises to give you the knowledge necessary to grow your very own plant baby—no green thumb required! This book review discusses the content, style, and research methods used in How to Raise a Plant Baby, as well as the author’s qualifications and credentials. If you’re interested in learning about how to raise your very own plant baby, this book review will tell you everything you need to know!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading How to Raise a Plant Baby. The book is written in an engaging and easy-to-follow manner, with lots of topics covered, making it an enjoyable read. In addition, the author provides point-wise advice on how to take care of your plant baby which I found very helpful. This is one book that every plant owner must have.

Some of the information in this book didn't really connect with me for the simple reason that I am a beginner in this field. The point-wise list was helpful, but it may be more beneficial for you if you are more experienced with plants. Many topics are covered, which is enjoyable and entertaining for some people, but if you don't enjoy learning about plants then it may not be your type of read. Overall, it's an exciting read and will likely be useful to beginners like me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the plant world or has been in the hobby for a while. The book covers many aspects related to growing plants which is perfect for people who want to acquire a lot of information quickly.
If you're looking for an enjoyable read that teaches you some great things, this book is for you!

Love to garden or seeking a new hobby? choose this book next. That is pretty much it in a nutshell. Let me now go into more detail about how excellent this book is. Beginning with his own personal experience as a plant enthusiast, Vinayak Garg talks about the special relationship his family has with plants. He persuades you to adopt a plant after explaining the benefits to you. He offers details on the kinds of plants we can cultivate at home and how to get the environment ready for the plants. He continues by outlining the circumstances that must exist for plants to flourish, conditions that we have studied in science classes throughout our academics.
He draws our attention to minute aspects that we would want to overlook or are unaware of. Vinayak assists us in identifying and deciphering the message from the plants. Plants are living things that communicate their happiness or distress to us.
This book is interesting because it contains a lot of information on how to take care of plants. He dispels a lot of plant-related fallacies that I was unaware of. The wording is straightforward, understandable, and free of jargon, which is a great plus. The recap at the end of each chapter is another excellent point. Once you've finished reading the book, you can return to it whenever you choose to quickly review the main themes. Chapters on plant lists and FAQs are both quite beneficial.
I wholeheartedly suggest this book to anyone who likes plants, cares for plants, or has put off gardening.

This non-fiction book, that details about the efforts and practices that one needs to follow to become a plant parent, is going to be my new encyclopaedia that is going to be referred from time to time. The author is a veteran in the field and he also found a community for plant enthusiasts “Lazy Gardener”.

I loved how the book debunked a lot of myths we have about growing plants in our houses, and eradicated any reluctance we might have. The book narration is casual and keeps us involved wrapper to wrapper. The crisp summary, the illustrations, the tabulated details made me love the book even more. Topping it, the book also focuses on the common mistakes we do, while giving hands-on practices and tests that help us rectify it ourselves. Trust me, the mini plant experiments, the FAQ and the well-curated collection of plant names were a cherry on the top!

It is a read, that one can finish in a single sitting. Trust me, you will have it in your shelf and periodically refer it as you raise your plant baby. I think everyone needs to read this to understand the importance of the presence of plants in our life.

Check out this book and I’m sure you’ll be more than excited to adopt your own plant baby and enlightened enough to keep it alive and nurture it.

"If we all spread the joy and lessons plants teach us, I truly believe we can preserve the natural beauty of our world for generations of gardeners to come."

✓My dad and I, we love plant parenting. My dad is way more experienced than me though. He has got skilled hands. I'm still at the beginner stage. When this book got recommended to me, I decided to get my hands on it and read this to expand my knowledge.
✓The entire content of this book has been divided into three parts. Each part has four - eight chapters. In the first part, the author talks about the feeling and responsibilities of being a gardener/plant parent. In the second part he primarily focuses on what your plant needs - proper nutrition for your plant. The third part focuses on how to care for your plant.
✓The language used is lucid, making the concept easy to grasp. Tables and pointers have been used which makes the read interesting, quick to understand and appealing to the eyes.
✓The title is sweet and simple. Which does not fail to touch the heart of plant parents. The cover is cute and aesthetic. Highly recommended to every plant lover.

The lovely non fiction book "How To Raise A Plant Baby" by "Vinayak Garg" is excellent to understand various gardening techniques.
The author provides a fundamental overview of various plant varieties, their wants and requirements, response strategies, right management of water, soil, nutrition, and fertilisers, as well as container selection and raising advice for all trees, in this book.
Because the author employs straightforward, simple to understand jargon and the events being conveyed are so relatable, it is difficult not to fall in love with his writing style.
As is well known, urbanisation has had a significant impact on everyone's lives. Nowadays, there is not much room around us, therefore we need to think carefully about how to garden.
The book includes simple and clever methods for raising healthy plants, particularly those that thrive in urban environments.
It is a book that can be read in one sitting. I promise you that while you raise your plat like a child, you will keep it on your shelf and occasionally refer to it.
Everyone who wishes to understand and learn gardening in a better way should read this book. They should read this master piece once.

It is a known fact that the world is becoming a concrete jungle. As the needs of the man grow day by day, the trees are being sacrificed to fulfill the wishes and whims of man and his never ending needs.

In this fast pace, one is forced to travel out of the city to see greenery or for a breath of fresh air.

The author in this book has found a solution so that we can use the micro space available in the congested landscapes to create our own green haven.

The book is divided into three parts and the author has given a topic to each part.

The book gives details about the plants - both indoors and outdoors, the requirements and also tips where we can handle and grow plants in our busy schedule.

I can say that this book has really helped me a lot as I wanted to have few plans in my apartment. The book helped me understand in depth and the language was lucid.

This is a must read for wanna be gardener's and plant lovers who want to cultivate and improve the habit and make their lives greener and fresher.

🌱 One thing that i always wanted to but was always afraid of was gardening, I have always wanted to be a plant parent but than i thought I was a plant bomber (hope many can relate with me) and then I saw this book with a very catchy title about plant baby.
🌳This book is something that will bring you into a different world where you will be guided step by step on everything about gardening and special mention to illustrations. The guide is super to use, very detailed and most of all it's a Begginers friendly. Loved the way the author took efforts in putting together all the doubts and tips even including beginners friendly plants. And the quality of the book is good.
🌲Definitely worth it to read if you want to be a plant parent also this book is not something that you read once but the one that will always make you come back to read it ( assuming you are a beginner)
🌴As for suggestions would recommend someone who is always trying to pick up gardening as hobby or someone who is searching for a new hobby.

We are all very familiar with the popular line, “First impression is the last impression” – cover page. It gives me a true sense of the line. The cover page is very attractive and eye pleasing and the title gives you a hint about the summer of the book.

Thanks to Vinayak Garg for bringing the presentation of the book with small relatable drawings which basically reminds me of my science books from school days. Attractively illustrated.

Demystifying requirements with water, light, and soil, charts and recaps summarize basic needs and how you can meet them when adopting a plant. Even if you're not a patient or avid reader, these tabloids will give you an overview of what to do with plant care. At the end of the day it is a living right. So we need to give it the time it needs to grow. And we can only help its growth through our efforts.

I'm sure the information I get from the book will help me on my journey to home gardening. The language is simple and easy to understand and the FAQ and sections for kids are definitely a great addition.

*HOW TO RAISE A PLANT BABY BY VINAYAK GARG*

Like the cover of the book promises, How to Raise a Plant Baby is truly a beginner’s guide to gardening happy plants. When I first picked up the book I was unsure whether I would be able to enjoy, understand and finish this book. I hardly knew anything about gardening and plants in general before reading this book. But this book came as an absolute delight in educating me about plants and gardening. So if you are a budding plant parent trying to raise plant babies, especially in an Urban Setting, or just someone curious like me wanting to know more about plants, this is a suitable book for you.

ALSO, this book has really really cute illustrations you're going to love. The amount of research and work this book has taken is evident in the author's way of explaining things so easily. I really wish to own a tulsi plant really soon, and this book will be of help. Don't you think?

RATING : 🌟🌟🌟🌟

A single plant can't change the world, but a single gardener can.
~
This book has every needed information which can make any human a mature plant parent who has a keen interest in gardening or marking the environment air pollution free.

Gardening is a way to remind ourselves that it takes time to cultivate and grow beauty in our lives. Long -term happiness requires patience. Plants don't grow at the click of a button; they demand consistent care. When you water a plant or move it into a different light, the plant won't react immediately. It takes a few days- if not weeks- to see new growth.'
~

Only a plant lover can understand what it feels like to take care of baby saplings but because of less knowledge we sometimes kill the plants by watering it more . This book has a complete guidance which can throw the lights on what we should do in order to grow a healthy plant and what shouldn't.

Plants play a very important role in our lives. They make up a large part of our diet, as well as being used to make medicines, soaps, furniture, textiles, tyres and much more. Although we now live in a highly industrialised society, we have lost this dependence on plants.
How to Raise a Plant Baby is a beginner's guide to happy plants. Vinayak Garg who is the founder of lazy Gardener wrote this book. He explained each and everything in a very simple way. It encourage us to appreciate nature and strive to sustain our surroundings and earth for the coming generations. The best part of this book is, first parts talks about the growth of a Gardener, second part talks about what your plants need to live and be happy and the third part talks about caring methods for our plants.
This book helps us in growing plants. So if you want to grow plants in proper way go grab the book. I would love to recommend this book to all the readers.

Plants are so drastically different from us mobile mammals that we struggle to fully grasp them.
Many of us who are plant-obsessed didn’t connect with plants right away. It took time. There was a journey we had to go on that would ultimately bring us to the point where plants are now the main thing we think about. After all, plants aren’t the easiest things to relate to. Not immediately anyway. Some of us have to work up to it.
But once you grow fond of them, there is no going back. This book is a guide for all the people who are living an urban life and find the process difficult. It is equipment which will help from the beginning till the end by experiences of people.
It is a must-read for all gardeners and plants parents. With easy language, this book can be your partner through the journey of plant parenting.

Happy Planting and Reading!
