Although different from my usual choice selection of books, I found this one not at all as bad as I thought it would be. I do admit, some scenes were rather slow and dull but I managed to read through them to some extent. One thing from book I wish was different would probably be the lack of physical action instead of so much emotional action from the characters and their sob-stories. Every time I got to a slow scene, I still found myself reading. One thing I really like, however, is how the book ended. This book does not exactly have a classic Hollywood 'everything is right as rain in the morning' ending. Although I did not like how my favorite character ended up, it did lead me to see reality poking through the words of the book, and this allows me to now appreciate Hollywood endings a bit more for most characters being happy, no matter how cliche it may be. This book was not my first choice, but the choice I should have chosen to read many years ago when I first got it.

Had this book since I was a kid and just enjoyed it for the first time. Interesting story that makes me think, what would I do?

I read this book because one of my struggling readers was reading it and I have a hard time carrying on conferences with such readers when I haven't read the book. I really enjoyed the story, made many connections to other things we have read and feel this will be a novel I recommend to others in the class. The characters were interesting, realistic and I really sympathized with them. Although the resolution is too predictable and boring, it's short enough that it doesn't have time to ruin the story for the reader. This book provides opportunities for discussions of conflict and multiple solutions characters come up with to try to solve the conflict.
