While rummaging around Grandma Pearl's attic, sisters Tracy Doyle and Amy Allen discover a box of old letters written to their grandmother in 1945 from a woman named Peggy living in Washington, D.C. Each letter has a reference to a Bible verse in the Book of Numbers. When they also find an old Bible with cryptic notations in the margins next to those exact same verses, the sisters' curiosity is piqued. With a little digging, Tracy concludes that Peggy was a code breaker during WWII. But was their beloved grandmother involved in secret war work, too?
And if the historic puzzle isn't intriguing enough, their cousin Robin confides that someone is stealing valuable items from her antiques shop. Tracy, who promises to discover the thief, complies a list of suspects who have opportunity and financial motives. But when one of the items mysteriously reappears on its shelf, Tracy wonders if the unknown culprit is stealing for some other reason altogether.

Continuing to enjoy this cozy mystery series based upon items found in the attic of Grandma Pearl. In Testament to a Patriot the mystery involved a female code breaker in WWII.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning about a part of history that is overlooked. I also liked how the troubles in the story were resolved to everyone's benefit, though it did seem to drag at times. I would recommend this book.
This is the second one I've read in this series, and I really enjoyed it. Always wished I had an attic to dig through. This time they find a packet of letters with references to the Book of Numbers along with a Bible to look them up. In the Bible next to the verses are notes they cannot decipher. I had several opinions on what the secret was to figure them out but was totally surprised when it was revealed, something I never thought about. The letters are written by someone they don't know, and they start the search to see if they can find the person, if she is even still alive, since the letters were written during the war and Grandma Pearl has already passed away. So, they had those two mysteries to solve. In addition, someone is stealing some valuable objects from Robins antique store and then returning them. They were also looking for a box of Grandma's old handkerchiefs and reference them at the end of the book. This is something we do have. My Mom had a black fancy box that she kept her handkerchiefs in. As children, we would love to go through it and she would tell us where she got them, or who gave them to her. My daughter still has it. A totally enjoyable book.
I'm already wishing I had found more of the books in the series when I bought my first set of 4. Great premise and "frame," with all the treasures and discovered secrets and mysteries in Grandma's attic.
This one reveals a nice chunk of history, and pays tribute to those who served secretly during WWII. And explores more about the three cousins and their families and relationships. Lovely series.
While going through their grandma's attic sisters discover some letters and a Bible dated from 1945. Strange notes in the letters plus Bible references make the girls wonder if their grandmother was working for the code talkers during World War II.
