"Did you know that your daily habits are instilling in you a false sense of control over your life? This leads to anxiety and broken relationships when things appear to go off track. But God has a trade that so-called control for influence"--
Wow 🤯 This book is amazing. As someone who likes to try to control things to remove my anxiety about what can happen, this hit me in the gut. Over and over.
I borrowed this from a friend, but I’m going to be on the search for a copy for myself. I’m also thinking of reading this book with other women as a study? It includes response prayers and discussion questions.
Here’s a section that really hit me:
“The truth is, every time we face the urge to control, we are presented with a choice: Will we trust God or ourselves? This question is at the heart of our faith. If faith is believing in what we cannot see, control is the opposite. It is choosing to trust what we can see namely, our own power, knowledge, and intentions. That's why control so thoroughly ravages our faith, and it's why our culture of control has left an entire generation of Christians spiritually unprepared to live in the actual world. We are trained, every single day, to trust what we can control and to fear what we cannot see. And it shows. If we want our faith to grow, and if we want to equip ourselves for discipleship in the real world, then we cannot simply reconcile ourselves to our lack of control; we must embrace it. Whenever we are handed the opportunity to trust God's character and will instead of our own, it is also an opportunity to build the spiritual muscle of surrender. And thankfully our days are full of these opportunities.”
