The Sentinels Saga #1
Path of the Eternal Sun
For General Sato, a sentinel of Samas, adherence to the Path comes as naturally as breathing. Honor and duty are the pillars of his life. When a new breed of bandit, more cunning and dangerous than ever before, threatens Samas, he finds that all his honor counts for little.
The giant known only as Beast, without family or people, is on the brink of achieving his life's work. He's never known fear or defeat, but an enemy approaches unlike any he has met before. For the first time in his life, Beast will question whether his strength is enough to save him.
Young Shin lives contentedly as a cog beneath the notice of the system she serves. When that system finally turns its back on her, she must find the will and courage to survive in a new world.
Over all, a shadow gathers its forces. It seeks to engulf Samas, the nation blessed by the eternal sun, in a darkness from which there is no escape.

Okay so Taylor reached out to me and asked me to read this book that he put out into the world in January.
I finally sat down to read the book, right when my life got in the way of reading!
But I was intrigued enough to keep at it, and I finally finished the last portion of the book today and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.
The 3 different points of views and storylines seemed to be really disparate when you start, but as the story progressed you start to see how they might converge, and not everything went the way that I thought it would go, but the characters were interesting.
Shin is a teenage girl from a Samas farm when her parents are murdered by corrupt guardians of the land. Sato is the favored general of the Sentinels and protector of the Firstborn and Samas. Beast is the Bandit King of Samas and a thorn in the side of the Firstborn.
There's a war that's been going on for years, and it's one that has been fought in the shadows of the world, hidden from the average citizen. But soon things start to boil over and steps into the light and it will take more than the shadows to handle the growing threat.
This is the beginning of a potential epic saga and thus had a ton of world building. It doesn't technically end on a cliffhanger, but there are questions at the end and I want to see what happens next to Sato, Beast, and Shin and what their roles will be going forward in this saga.

Path of the Eternal Sun starts off with a gripping prologue that leaves the reader wanting more, a telling of battle between good and evil and all walks of life coming together to work as one to defeat the corruption. I love me a good action-packed fighting scene! Bloodshed aplenty! Beautifully written character development which led me to like almost every single one, regardless of if they were a sentinel or sin or somewhere in between. My only exception to this was Yuki, I felt her deception toward Shin was a little unwarranted which threw me for a little bit of a loop. I did love the relationship with Beast and Shin as the story progressed. His admiration for her and her battle prowess was awe-inspiring.
The otherworldly creatures were terrifying in their creatively penned behaviors and mannerisms. I'm thankful these are only beings in the story!
All in all, I took great delight in reading this adventure.
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

📚Plot/pacing:
The sentinels are corrupt. The bandits are uniting under one front. And a long forgotten secret threatens all.
Fast paced, action packed plot with ancient terrors, what’s not to love? The authors did a great job of weaving together all these different threads and machinations!
This is a very fast paced book, and at the start I loved that, but I would have liked it to slow down for some sections. In particular emotional beats and scenes could feel like they were on fast forward. I wanted to hang out for longer during some sections. However, I’m sure others will love how fast paced it is.
📚Characters:
Path follows three different POVs. First we have Beast, the bandit king. A brute of a man, who is slowly enveloping all the rogue bandit groups roaming the country, and bringing them under his control. His unphased attitude, blood thirsty brutality, and funny quips made him my favourite character of the bunch. Highly entertaining to read from his POV!
We also have Sato, a sentinel. I didn’t think I’d like his chapters at the start, but the dynamic between him and his men was great to watch progress.
Finally Shin, young farmer girl tossed into the mess. I didn’t find her chapters as exciting as the others. I wasn’t as invested in her, but she did have some great moments especially towards the end.
📚World building:
You don’t get much on the world building until later in the book so I’ll keep this vague. The ideas behind some of the world building is fascinating. And seeing {redacted character name} in the final battle shows what is possible with the magic system adds a layer of depth to show how far one can go.
In the next books, I’d love to see more of life on these islands too. This was a very focused plot following these three characters, which worked well. But I’d love to see more of normal life in this world.
Overall I really enjoyed this and will be picking up book 2! The characters, plot, and world building was great. My main complaint was that I wanted more with slower pacing, and I think that’s a good problem to have!

I really enjoyed this book. Its what I call a light fantasy and therefore would be suitable for anyone who is usually hesitant with this genre or anyone who loves it. The characters are well developed without any heavy detail and the plot / world building is easy to understand and follow. I liked the switches of characters and eventually how they come together. I was completely gripped towards the end!
