Emmett Collins accompanies Joshua Chamberlain to Camp Mason just outside of Portland, Maine. Here, a motley crew of extras from various other regiments are gathering to muster into the Union Army. Chamberlain begins the brutal transformation from leader of students to leader of soldiers on the battlefield through order, discipline, and an earthy approach to various troubles that arise. After only two weeks, the 20th Maine is shipped off to the killing fields of Virginia, where they get their first brush with the Confederates at the battle of Antietam. From this point forward, Chamberlain begins a meteoric rise through the ranks to Colonel and then General, as he helps turn the tides of the war at Gettysburg, is left for dead at Rives Salient, and is chosen to accept the surrender of Robert E. Lee and Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Courthouse.

At Every Hazard is a great combination of history and believable personalities to bring history alive. The battle scenes make you feel like you're in the middle of the action!
This is a history of the Civil War told from the perspective of Joshua Chamberlain. It describes the battles that Chamberlain was part of as well as his injuries. It also details his marriage and his struggles and lack of support from his wife, Fanny. This is the first book I have read by this author and it was very enlightening. Highly recommend this book.
