My name is Maggie Mason, and I'm kind of a klutz. So when a talking owl shows up telling me I've been chosen to host this year's Lunar Festival, I don't really know what to think. I'm a magical librarian, not an event planner. But it's a huge honor, and I'm not about to pass up this chance to improve my reputation. Armed with my familiar cat Martin and my crazy family, we're going to make this the best Lunar Festival ever. There's just one problem... The ceremonial moonstone? You know, the centerpiece of the whole affair? It's missing, and I'm starting to think someone stole it. Yeah, I think I've got my work cut out for me this year. No pressure. * * * Maggie's Missing Moonstone is a paranormal cozy mystery about being true to yourself. Curl up with this heartwarming family-friendly read today!
This novella was previously published in the anthology Moons, Magic & Mystery.
It was so funny! Great tone, lighthearted writing style, fun! Exciting, too. A cute little mystery, which was easy enough to solve, but it was more about finding confidence than anything. So, it had some depth added as well, which made it quite layered for a short!
Quote: “Be kind. Everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” These are the words I live by. So I felt very drawn to Maggie! I really hope this will be a series!
3 ½ stars This is a short story in the Magic Library Cozy Mystery series and the main character is Maggie Mason, who is a bit of a klutz at being a witch. She has to work and study really hard to learn magic spells, but not everything works as it should. She works in the town’s magical library, where trying to put back books at the end of the day could be a massive exercise, as the library moves and rearranges itself as it likes. She lives with her familiar cat Martin and answers a knock at the door, only to be shocked to see an owl delivering post to her. Not that Martin finds owls something he likes, as he makes quite plain by hissing at it. It is a magical invite to be the next host of the very coveted Lunar Festival, this year. She only has a week or two to get ready and it is an important role that some witches might even kill for, but is completely randomly a name pulled out of a hat! At work that day, a former classmate who she would love to ignore, comes in asking if her book order has arrived. Maggie goes off to look for it, only for the woman to berate her and the library for not having it ready for her. She goes off into the library and next Maggie hears a loud crash. It seems this annoying woman, Rayna Willows, who thinks she is a much better witch than Maggie and has the job role to prove it, has knocked over a trolley full of books and blames Maggie for it, even though she made the mess herself, she expects Maggie to clear up after her! Another annoying mess to sort out, as if she didn’t have enough to do to arrange matters for her new role as host for the upcoming Lunar Festival. When her gran visits her the next day with a warning and asks about her moonstone, a magical stone that witches use as the source of their power and which has an integral part to play in this Lunar Festival, she discovers it isn’t in her purse like it normally is. She may be a bit of a klutz sometimes, like putting her chequebook in the fridge somehow, but she has never misplaced such an important item before. Her gran helps her to see through her moonstone and to see where and when it went missing, only to find out it was stolen and she now knows who by. Why another witch would steal her moonstone is unclear, as they only work for the witch they are gifted to when they come into their powers. It should be useless to anyone else. That is, unless someone is trying to ruin her chances of hosting the Luna Festival, as she won’t be able to do it without her own ceremonial moonstone, as the centre of the evening’s ceremony! A simple cozy mystery, set in the magical Arcane Library, with a slightly ditzy main character and her familiar Martin. I look forward to some more tales from the library and hopefully some longer stories as well. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
― Rating: 3.75 Stars ★★★ 3/4 Maggie's Missing Moonstone is a short story perfect for the fall or if you need a cozy small-town mystery and enjoy MAGICAL LIBRARIES! It features Maggie, a rather clumsy witch who works at the Arcane Library and lives with her familiar, a cat named Martin. She ends up being picked for hosting the Lunar Festival , an important yearly event where the town's witches can continue to harness their magical powers. The only problem is "town klutz" Maggie lost her Moonstone and needs it in time for the event!
Morgan wrote such a light, but equally intriguing magical mystery that frankly, leaves you wanting to know more. The small town vibes are there, a magical library? YES love that!!, plus all the coziness of a fantasy story, adored it. However, the writing itself is a bit plain leaving it as a more of "telling not showing" kind of situation with the storytelling, so it feels like your just being explained all these different pieces of the characters or story when its convenient for the chapter.
But I really did enjoy Maggie's journey to see the confidence in her skills, that was a nice message that the author brought into the story & her familiar, Martin was probably one of my favorites (a talking cat!). As we learn Maggie lost her moonstone it becomes a a fun mystery figuring out what happened to it and getting to explore a little more of the town.
Maggie works in a magical library, has a supportive family but lacks confidence in herself and the skills she has as a witch. I liked how that was a big thread of the story and wasn't just brushed to the side, as its pretty clear from the beginning she's kind of a mess.
There's other interesting characters from her family, her Grandma Sam (who rides a pink scooter), and I guess her "arch rival" Rayna. Because there's a past to Maggie before becoming a witch (like attending an academy), you get mainly exposition about it but again my biggest disappointment for all the perfect elements of a cozy fantasy mystery this had, was the lack of description and writing that just explains everything. There wasn't really a concrete style and relied on short, overused expressions to make Maggie's thoughts more obvious. There's these locations, town traditions, the Arcane Library and they sound like fascinating places and ideas, but I think cause of the length there really is not much time to explore them at all because it focus just on solving the mystery.
Honestly though I wouldn't mind reading a more lengthy story with this setting just so it can be explored a bit more. Overall, I liked stepping out of my comfort zone to read this little mystery, it was light, cute and kind of what I needed right now (and yes what drew me to this was the lovely illustrated cover!!!)
When I downloaded this book at a book review site, I didn't realize how short it was. While I enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries, I like them to be either long novellas or proper novels. If they are as short as this one is, they tend to not be complex enough, with all the delightful red herrings, multiple suspects, and misdirections that readers love in mysteries. So, while I liked the heroine—though the forgetfulness aspect may have been overplayed—and adored her grandma, I didn't feel the story had enough meat. It was clear from the beginning who made the moonstone go missing, once you met the character and saw the animosity between the key characters. The story is so short that I read it over dinner. If you like simple mysteries that have little mystery to them, you may enjoy this very short novella more than I did.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Having the right tools for the job makes all the difference, so finding our heroine's missing moonstone is essential. No one want to find out what happens if the blessing does not occur. Do they?
This is a cozy witch mystery. I love this genre as they usually provide a mix of mystery, humor and a touch of magic which just makes them the perfect stories to relax and enjoy. This one fits that to a tee with an excellent setting, great characters and an intriguing mystery all wrapped up in one. The mystery is a good one which kept things interesting throughout. Overall, another fun story and I look forward to more from this author.
Highly recommended.

How can you hold a Lunar Festival without the Ceremonial Moonstone? Well Maggie knows you can't and now she had to find out who could have stolen it. With the help of granny Sam and Martin her familiar, she will make this festival great. Looking forward to more.
I don't want to give away the plot, but the ending is very satisfying. It is a story that will make you feel good and the magic in life is all around you. Loved it.
